Earlier this term, I communicated planned changes to our school timetable, and some of the programs run across the school. Change, as we all know, can be challenging. It brings with it uncertainty, the need to adapt to new ways of being, and an element of grieving for what is lost. However, it also brings opportunity—an opportunity to grow, improve, and better meet the needs of our students.
These planned changes are the result of a long period of reflection, research, and consultation involving staff, students and parent focus groups. We have always been proud of the excellent results our students achieve and are committed maintaining these results whilst also seeking continuous improvement. Our goal is to ensure that the educational program we offer is not only of the highest quality but that our school is a centre for excellence in the education of highly able learners.
Our school’s ethos is to provide a holistic education and developing well-rounded individuals. The upcoming changes reflect this commitment, aiming to support our students in all aspects of their growth. We will continue to focus on retaining what is great about our school—our strong academic results, student leadership, clubs, and house program—while also making adjustments that will enhance the overall student experience.
In changing the period length and some of the subjects on offer in Year 9 and 10. We aim to provide additional challenges for our middle years’ students, fostering a learning environment that encourages higher-order thinking and the application of knowledge through extended learning periods. These longer periods will allow for deeper exploration of subjects, giving students the time and space they need to engage meaningfully with their learning.
In addition, we are introducing study periods across all year levels. This initiative is intended to increase student agency, allowing them to take greater responsibility for their own learning. By having dedicated time to focus on their studies, students can develop important skills in time management, self-directed learning, and independent thinking. This will support them in making better use of their longer study periods once they reach Senior School.
We are also mindful of the importance of student wellbeing in the midst of these academic advancements. In implementing a targeted and explicit program we aim to proactively support the wellbeing of our students. This program is designed to equip students with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of school life and beyond, ensuring they are not only successful learners but also well-rounded individuals.
We understand that these changes may require some adjustment, and we are committed to supporting our students, staff, and families throughout this transition. We believe that these changes will enable us to provide an enhanced educational experience for all our students.
Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this new chapter together.
