Book of the Week
The road to winter
By Mark Smith
The road to winter is a story set in the near future, when a virus has wiped out most of the population in Australia. 15-year-old Finn has been on his own for two years, with only his dog, Rowdy, for company, living off the land and trapping rabbits.
One day his isolated life is shattered when a girl turns up in town, on the run from a violent gang. When Finn decides to help her, he finds himself drawn into danger and having to make decisions not only for himself but new friends as well.
The road to winter is a quick and easy read, I found it to be very atmospheric and intriguing, and Finn is a great character. He’s likeable and resourceful and has a strong sense of right and wrong. There is plenty of action and suspense, and a bittersweet ending that will leave you wanting more.
