Science in 5/6:
It has been an exciting and engaging term in Science for our Year 5/6 students! This term, students have been exploring Chemical Science – Matter, developing their understanding of the properties of materials, states of matter and how substances can change.
Throughout their learning, students investigated the observable and measurable properties of materials, exploring characteristics such as colour, texture, hardness, solubility and state. They also explored the three states of matter: solids, liquids and gases through many different experiments like cloud dough and making jelly.
A key focus of their learning was understanding the difference between reversible and irreversible changes. Students investigated how some changes, such as dissolving substances in water and changing states, can be reversed to recover the original substance. We also explored irreversible changes, including cooking, where new substances are formed.
Science in 3/4:
This term, students in 3/4 have been investigating the properties of natural and made materials, exploring how different materials are used, compared and tested in our everyday lives.
They explored the difference between natural and made materials. Students discovered that natural materials come from the environment, such as wood, cotton and wool, while made materials are created or processed by people to serve particular purposes.
Throughout the term, students investigated a range of materials, including fibres, metals, and plastics. They explored the observable and measurable properties of these materials, describing and comparing characteristics such as strength, flexibility, texture, hardness, absorbency and durability through different experiments. Students developed an understanding of how these properties influence the ways materials are used and how they can be reused.
Science in 1/2:
It has been a wonderful term of hands-on learning and discovery in Science for our Year 1/2 students! This term, students have been exploring how materials can be changed physically and how we can use materials wisely to care for our Earth.
Throughout the term, students investigated how materials can be changed through different physical actions without creating new materials. They explored how materials can be bent, twisted, stretched, crushed, squashed and broken into smaller pieces.
They also focused on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling materials to help care for Earth's water, land and air. Students explored how they can use materials wisely and why it is important to conserve Earth's natural resources.
Through Science discussions and activities, students considered how their everyday choices can affect the environment. They explored ways to reuse items by making robots, animals and rockets out of recycled materials.
Science in Foundation:
This term, students have been developing their early scientific investigation skills by learning how to observe the world around them, ask questions and explore through simple experiments.
Throughout the term, students have been learning about their five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. They explored how their senses help them learn about and investigate the world around them. Through fun, hands-on activities, students practised using their senses to observe different materials, sounds and objects.
Students participated in different experiments this term including learning about floating and sinking, melting ice, what materials absorb and mixing materials with vinegar and bicarb soda.
