Social Science

As we come to the end of Term 3, we would like to wish our Year 12 students the best of luck as they prepare for their HSC examinations. The boys have been engaged in lots of post-trial learning activities with a focus on writing and examination techniques.

Now that year 11 has finished their Preliminary exams, we encourage students to watch and read the news during the two week break to prepare for their HSC courses. Current news affairs are a key focus area for all four Social Science subjects.

Focus areas may include:

- Business Studies: Finance - How would another interest rate hike impact businesses?

- Economics: keep watching the Kolher report.

- Geography: Look at our current weather events and the long-term impacts on climate.

- Legal Studies: Human Rights - What is the Australian Government doing to address the human rights abuses in youth detention centres?

Our Year 10 Commerce students are also preparing for their yearly examinations. This is a valuable opportunity for students to consolidate their learning from the year and demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed.

Meanwhile, our Year 7 and 8 students are completing their final stimulus-based assessment. We encourage students to apply themselves, carefully consider the stimulus material provided, and demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year.

Year 7 Boots on the ground!

On Friday 11 September the Year 7 cohort attended the Gibberagong Geography excursion at Bobin Head and West Head. The boys got to practice many of the skills they’ve already learned in class such as drawing a field sketch and finding the aspect of a slope. In addition, they learned some new skills such as finding the wind speed, air temperature, soil temperature and pH level of soil.

Not only were they practising Geography skills but also enjoying a short bushwalk in the area and acquainting themselves with the locals! There were many bush turkeys and cockatoos who thought the boys’ lunches looked more appetizing than what they could find themselves in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. I’m happy to report our Year 7s elected not to feed the locals.

Below you can see the boys in action!
