English Faculty Update
It has been a busy and productive term for the English Faculty, with students across Years 7 to 12 working towards important assessment and examination milestones.
For our Year 12 students, attention has firmly turned towards final preparation for the HSC examinations. Following the Trial HSC, students participated in four targeted feedback sessions, designed to address specific areas of the examination and provide practical strategies for improvement. These sessions allowed students to reflect on their Trial performance, revisit key skills and apply feedback directly to their writing.
Year 12 have now moved into differentiated English classes, with a particular focus on improving performance in Module C: The Craft of Writing. Students have been grouped according to areas of need, allowing teachers to provide more targeted instruction and support. Across these classes, students are refining their imaginative, discursive, persuasive and reflective writing skills as they prepare for their final examinations. We wish all our Year 12 students the very best as they enter the final weeks of their HSC journey.
Our Year 11 students are also approaching an important point in their studies as they move into the Yearly Examination period. These examinations provide students with an opportunity to consolidate the knowledge skills they have developed throughout the preliminary course and prepare for the increased demands of Year 12. We encourage students to use this period to establish effective revision habits and respond carefully to the feedback provided by their teachers.
Across Years 7 to 10, students are completing their final assessed units of work for the year. A significant focus across these programs is the continued development of essay writing and analytical skills. Students are working on constructing clear arguments, selecting appropriate textual evidence and developing increasingly sophisticated analysis. Building these skills progressively across the junior years in an important part of preparing students for the demands of senior English.
Beyond the classroom, the English Faculty is excited to be running the Margaret Lawrence Competition, a speech competition providing students with an opportunity to develop their confidence, public speaking skills and ability to communicate ideas to an audience. The competition will be judged by some of our talented senior debaters, giving younger students the opportunity to showcase their speaking skills before experienced student adjudicators.
Finally, we are very pleased to welcome several new members to the English Faculty: Ms Wang, Mr Vallieres, Ms Emery and Ms Allison-Watson. Each has already made a valuable contribution the faculty, bringing new ideas. experience and enthusiasm to our classrooms, We look forward to the contributions they will continue to make to English at Epping Boys High School.
