Keilor Division Intermediate Baseball
On Friday 6th March, our new look Yarrabing Intermediate Baseball team competed in the Keilor Division Baseball Tournament. Unusually for first round, there were a full five teams entered, so the boys played through four games. For most of our players it was their very first time playing baseball, and the inability to train outside and practise batting and catching with real, hard centre baseballs put them at a disadvantage. However, the boys had turned up to lunch time preparation sessions and listened carefully to the tricky rules. As a result, after watching our team stealing bases at a rate of knots and running on dropped strike 3s, some of the other less clued up schools started copying!
As the games progressed, the boys developed excellent team work skills, picking up on where to position in the field, who to throw to and helping to watch the baserunners. They supported each other on the field and looked after each other in the dugout. A shout-out to Flynn for going straight over to take care of one of our basemen after he suffered a horribly rough push from a St Albans baserunner. We played better and better as the day went on, including only going down 5-8 to Southern Cross in a tight game.
Well done to our superstar catchers, Elijah and Derek. Catching is the hardest job in baseball, and their superb takes and covering of the plate kept the opposition in check. Guntaj, Ansh and Riyansh stepped up to the mound to pitch games, doing an unbelievable job considering it was their first time pitching. Ansh also starred for the team at the plate, getting us going with some impressive hits. Excellent work and concentration by our infielders, Kabir, Krrish, Zavier and Tyeson. These positions require quick reflexes and accurate throwing. Our outfielders, Sahej, Jeevan, Parmeet, Kumail and Flynn, worked hard running, catching fly balls and making long throws. Also, a big thank you to our injured captain, Sean, who supported the team on the sidelines, acted as first base coach and took care of the tosses and captain’s duties. We would love to see all of you back on the team next year!
A big shout out to Ms Green for helping us on the day, including picking up buses, driving and acting as bench coach.
Junior baseball is later in the year, look out on Compass for sign-ups or let Ms Fenby know if you wish to join the Yarrabing Baseball Google Classroom. For now, let’s enjoy the Major League Baseball season (go Atlanta!)
