We are creating some fabulous weaves at St Mary's!
The F/1/2 students have been weaving detailed, paper bookmarks that include recycled book pieces. The smaller strips of paper are strengthening the students' fine motor skills.
We have now started our final weaving project that we will finish by the end of term. This woven butterfly ties in nicely with the information text the students are using during Writing lessons.
The 3/4 students completed their Kumihimo bracelet weave. They were shown how to create the simple, circular loom from recycled cardboard.
This strong, Japanese braid was originally used for Samurai to lace their armor. It was also used as decorative ties for kimonos, Buddhist scrolls, and religious ceremonies. Today, Kumihimo are commonly used as friendship bracelets and keychains.
We are now creating 'God's Eye' weaves and using small cardboard looms for a personalised project.
The 5/6 students have planned and begun their final weave project. The plan included what the finished product would be (bookmark, wall hanging, coaster etc), the colours they planned to use, the stitches they were hoping to include and how long they wanted their finished product to be.
Some students were so motivated to continue their weave that they chose to do some over their recess time! I have also had students share that they have completed weaves at home and taught some of their family members - Love this!
