'Fresh Water Flow': An On Country experience

On Monday 8 December, the College's First Nations students took part in a final experience from the 'Fresh Water Flow' theme of this year. Our day, guided by Sharnie, offered a rich opportunity to connect with Country, culture and community through abundant water and river systems that are located just a short distance from our school.

Our journey took us to Mrytle Forest just past Collinsvale, where students walked to the overflowing waterfall through an uphill trek amongst giant ferns and moss-covered rocks.

At the top of the falls, students found a space to listen to Country and learn about how the old people would follow river systems through the mountains to meet other groups for trade and gatherings.

We then travelled to Tynwald Park in New Norfolk for a short walk exploring a larger river system which runs all the way through to Nipaluna/Hobart. It was here students learned the Palawa Kani name for the River Derwent - Timtumili Mianya. Together, we enjoyed lunch, a play, an ice-cream and some quiet reflection time before heading back to school.
