Year 1/2 News
Hourig, Jack and Tiffany
We have had a fantastic start to the school year and it has been wonderful getting to know the children as they settle into their new classroom and routines. Our focus during these first few weeks has been on building positive relationships and helping students feel safe, confident, and excited about learning.
Below is a snapshot of what we have been working on together in the classroom.
Student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do in 1/2 – The Reef. We are creating a caring and supportive classroom environment where students feel comfortable to share their ideas, take risks, and try new challenges.
We have been spending time discussing our school values of respect, resilience, and responsibility, and practising what these look like in our classroom and playground. Students are learning how to be kind to classmates, good listeners, and responsible learners.
Establishing clear and consistent routines has been an important focus as we begin the year. Students have been learning our morning routine, including where to place their bags, lunch boxes, and water bottles independently.
Each morning also includes 10 minutes of self-reading time, helping students settle into the day calmly while developing a love of reading. These routines support students to feel organised, confident, and ready to learn.

Literacy
In Literacy, we are focusing on retelling stories and sequencing events. Students are learning to talk about what happened first, next, and last using clear language.

In Maths, we are developing number understanding and practising skip counting by tens, starting from both zero and non-zero numbers. Students are using hands-on materials and number patterns to build confidence and deepen their understanding.
