There are certain moments in a young person’s life that mark more than simply the passing of time. They signify change, growth and a step into something new. In schools, these rites of passage matter because they give us an opportunity to pause, acknowledge who our young people are becoming, and remind them that they do not make these transitions alone.
Last Friday, we welcomed our incoming Year 7 students and their families at Transition Twilight, marking one of their first steps into College life. For these students, the transition to secondary school represents a significant new beginning. There are new friendships to form, routines to learn, challenges to embrace and a community waiting to welcome them.
At the other end of the journey, our Year 12 students are preparing to farewell the College community they have called their own. Their final weeks bring their own collection of “lasts”, alongside opportunities to reflect on the people, experiences and memories that have shaped their journey. Preparations for these farewell moments are already underway, including student involvement in the Year 12 Farewell Assembly this week.
Although Year 7 and Year 12 sit at opposite ends of the secondary school journey, these moments are deeply connected. One group is being welcomed in as another prepares to be sent forth. Both are standing at a threshold between what has been familiar and what comes next.
Rites of passage give meaning to these thresholds. They allow us to say: this moment matters. They provide space to celebrate growth, acknowledge change and recognise that belonging to a community leaves an imprint long after a particular chapter has ended.
Perhaps most importantly, these moments remind our students that transition is not something they navigate alone. Parents, families, friends, teachers and peers walk alongside them, sometimes offering reassurance and sometimes simply reminding them how far they have already come.
As we welcome our newest students and farewell our graduating class, we celebrate not only beginnings and endings, but everything that happens in between: the relationships built, the challenges overcome, the lessons learned and the sense of belonging that turns a school into a community.
