At Park Orchards Primary School, we know that children learn best when they feel safe, supported and connected. While academic learning is important, student wellbeing is the foundation that helps children engage in learning, build friendships and develop confidence.
What is wellbeing?
Wellbeing is about a child's overall health and happiness. It includes their physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing. Like adults, children experience a range of emotions every day. Feeling worried, frustrated, disappointed or sad from time to time is a normal part of growing up.
Positive wellbeing doesn't mean children are happy all the time. Instead, it means they have the skills, support and confidence to manage life's ups and downs in healthy ways.
Children are more likely to thrive when they:
Mental health matters
Mental health is an important part of everyone's wellbeing. It exists on a continuum, meaning it can change over time depending on what is happening in a child's life.
Sometimes children may seem more tired than usual, become withdrawn, feel worried or irritable, or lose interest in activities they normally enjoy. Recognising these changes early and talking openly about feelings helps children seek support when they need it.
Building resilience
One of the most valuable skills we can teach children is resilience, the ability to cope with challenges, recover from setbacks and keep moving forward.
Resilience doesn't mean avoiding difficulties. Instead, it helps children develop confidence, problem-solving skills and the understanding that they can overcome obstacles with the support of caring adults.
At school, we intentionally teach and nurture these skills through our wellbeing programs, positive relationships and everyday classroom experiences.
Why wellbeing is so important
Research consistently shows that wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. When children feel safe, connected and emotionally supported, they are more engaged in the classroom, more willing to take on challenges and better able to develop the skills they need to learn and succeed.
At Park Orchards Primary School, we believe that supporting student wellbeing is essential to helping every child thrive. By working together as a school and community, we can nurture children’s confidence, resilience, self-awareness and ability to build positive relationships. These skills not only support students during their time at school but also provide a strong foundation for their future.
Throughout the year, students participate in a range of wellbeing initiatives, including The Resilience Project, Respectful Relationships and classroom activities that promote positive mental health, resilience and strong connections. Through these programs, students develop strategies to manage emotions, overcome challenges, show empathy and build respectful relationships with others.
