Grade 5 and 6

Term 1 Reflection

It is crazy to think we are at the end of Term 1 for 2026. The last 10 weeks have flown by but it has been wonderful connecting, building routines and enjoying our first term together. Along with our rich learning, we have had our Summer Sports - Interschool Sports program where we saw the students play with positivity and great sportsmanship in which we won some games and were competitive in others. Thank you to the students for their leadership, to the staff for making this happen, to the parents that supported us and to the Grade 4 students who filled in. We had our Swimming Carnival to start off the year, Sex Ed, buddy time, rehearsals for Aladdin and some THRIVE events to round out an amazing Term 1.

English: A Journey Across the Seas

What a powerful and engaging novel Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman is. Students thoroughly enjoyed exploring this class text, which sparked important conversations about children’s rights, global issues, and world events that are still relevant today.

During our English block, students participated in routines designed to encourage rich discussion and thoughtful engagement with the text. As we read Boy Overboard together, students responded to comprehension questions and made meaningful connections to the story.

Our writing sessions focused on crafting short, engaging, and detailed sentences. Students explored sentence length and structure, building tension, and using both fast-paced and slow, intentional language to enhance their writing. Using these skills, students created and developed their own narrative versions inspired by Boy Overboard.

To bring the story to life, we also explored the stage play adaptation of the novel. Students compared the play to the original text and worked collaboratively to act out scenes, deepening their understanding of the characters and events.

Numeracy: The Four Operations

In Mathematics, we have continued to explore the four operations with decimal numbers and fractions. Students are really grasping their understanding of place value with decimals and implementing these into solving problems with the four operations. We have consolidated the steps involved to estimate and then solve to find the answer and show our working out. It has been wonderful to see the students confidence grow as the weeks progressed.

Leaders of Now and Our Future

Our Grade 6 students are leading the way across many aspects of our school and wider community. They are proudly embracing their leadership roles and, with their new leader T-shirts and hoodies, are now even more recognisable as role models within our school. The presentation of these items is always a special milestone, and this year was no exception, the excitement and genuine appreciation shown by students was truly remarkable.

Our leaders have stepped up in every way. Whether participating/helping organise Interschool Sport, supporting our Prep students during PE, speaking confidently at our THRIVE Night, or introducing new initiatives at assemblies, they continue to demonstrate initiative, responsibility and care for others.

They have also represented our school with pride and respect at the Young Leaders Day (take a look at our Captain's Corner for their reflection on this event).

We are incredibly proud of the way our Grade 6 students are showing what it truly means to be a leader.

THRIVE

Alongside The Resilience Project we have our schools THRIVE program. Throughout the term we work together to continue to thrive as a community. These events and programs link our school pillars, house culture and student wellbeing. Thank you to our community for turning out for our THRIVE night and disco.

And what a way to finish our term with our Harmony Day and Colour Run celebration.
