Grade 3 and 4

Term 1 2026
As Term 1 comes to a close, we are so pleased to reflect on what a fantastic and busy start it has been for our Year 3 and 4 students. The year began on a positive note, with students settling in beautifully and showing enthusiasm and a wonderful attitude toward their learning. We have been delighted with the strong start, and it has been lovely to see such a happy, energetic feeling across our classrooms.
We are incredibly proud of how each child has already begun building confidence, developing new skills, and creating positive memories.
Wishing all our families a safe, relaxing, and happy Easter break.
We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed for another great term ahead.
Inquiry
Polly Woodside & Captain Cook's Cottage
Our Year 3 and 4 students recently enjoyed a wonderful excursion to Polly Woodside and Captain Cook’s Cottage in the Fitzroy Gardens, bringing their learning to life through hands-on experiences. As part of our Inquiry unit, students explored daily life in earlier times and the significance of historical sites. During our visit to Polly Woodside, students had a fantastic hands-on experience, discovering what life was like aboard a ship in the olden days and engaging in interactive activities that highlighted the daily routines and challenges faced by sailors.
At Captain Cook’s Cottage, students were fascinated to learn that the cottage was originally built in England in 1755 and was later carefully transported and rebuilt in Melbourne. It was wonderful to see their curiosity and engagement as they made connections to what we have been learning in class. The students also had a great time in the gardens, enjoying lunch together and playing in the beautiful surroundings, making it a fun and memorable day for everyone.
English
This term, students have loved applying their writing skills to create imaginative narratives and persuasive pieces. It has been fantastic to see their creativity, confidence, and pride shine through the planning, drafting, editing, and publishing of their work. Publishing their stories was a real highlight, giving them the chance to celebrate and share their achievements. We have also begun our author study in preparation for Term 2, exploring the work of Colin Thiele, author of Storm Boy, and learning about storytelling techniques to guide our reading and writing next term.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term, our Year 3 and 4 students have been developing their number skills through a range of engaging and differentiated learning experiences. Students have been building confidence in addition and subtraction, using place value to partition, rearrange, and regroup numbers, and applying a variety of mental and written strategies to solve problems. Across the year levels, learning has been tailored to support individual growth, from using part-part-whole strategies and concrete materials to strengthen understanding, through to solving more complex problems involving larger numbers and fractions with related denominators. It has been wonderful to see students use efficient strategies, explain their thinking, and apply their knowledge to a range of problem-solving situations.
Thrive
We were incredibly fortunate to welcome Australian snowboarding star Scotty James to our school recently, where he shared stories about his journey, achievements and what it takes to chase big goals. Scotty is one of Australia’s most successful winter sports athletes, with multiple World Championship titles and Olympic medals to his name, and hearing him speak so openly about his experiences inspired and excited our students. It was a memorable visit that gave everyone a unique insight into the dedication, resilience and passion behind sporting success, and we feel very lucky to have had him here to meet our community.
This term, our THRIVE program has been bringing students together to celebrate wellbeing, house spirit, and our school values. It was fantastic to see so many families join in for our THRIVE night and disco – such a fun way to connect as a community!
We finished the term with a splash of colour and celebration during Harmony Day and our Colour Run, creating happy memories and lots of smiles all around.
TRP
This term, our Year 3 and 4 students have been building on GEM – Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness – through lessons 4, 5, and 6 of The Resilience Project. They’ve been practising noticing the positives, understanding others’ feelings, and using mindfulness to stay calm and focused. Students have enjoyed sharing ideas, reflecting on their experiences, and finding ways to use these skills in everyday life. It’s been fantastic to see them developing habits that support wellbeing, kindness, and a positive classroom community. Many students have even been spotting moments of gratitude and practising mindfulness during playtime and lunch, showing GEM in action every day!
