Sailing Enchancement

Term 4 2023

This year we have been fortunate enough to have the participants to form a college sailing team. Sailing Enhancement began in Term 4 and will continue into Term 1 next year. Ms Van Galen is the teacher in charge with help from our coaches Tash Kurzeme and multi time world champion Mark Bulka.

Prior to the beginning of the John Middleton Series, we completed multiple training sessions at McCrae Yacht Club, taking advantage of the pacers, rescue boats and other facilities on offer which had been supplied by the club for the benefit of our teams.

The sailing team competed in three weeks of team racing that was held at Davey's Bay Yacht Club. We began with a shaky start due to the lack of teams racing completed by the students. But over the next few weeks of racing, the college team finally came through to take out their first few wins, claiming two wins on our second week and then another three during the following session.

After several years of absence from team racing, this year the college’s team had fourteen competitors from Years 7 to 9, which is enough to fill two teams and have two remaining sailors that left us with the option to switch up and alternate the crews through different boats.

This has been a great opportunity to learn different skills in sailing for those who haven’t sailed at all and even for those who are more experienced. Once again a big shout out to Ms Van Galen, Mark and Tash for making this experience possible.

If you are keen to begin sailing or try it out visit your nearest club or contact Ms Van Galen for further information.
