A Message from the Victorian Conservation Regulator, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action
- Less than 50 percent of Victoria’s original native vegetation remains and we need to protect what’s left.
- You might not think about it, but native plants play an important role in our ecosystems, including providing food and vital habitat for our Aussie birds, reptiles, and mammals. This includes trees that might look dead or logs covered in moss on the ground – they’re also incredibly important for the environment.
- All native plants, like trees, shrubs and grasses, are protected in Victoria and it is against the law to damage, destroy, or remove them without authorization. Anyone caught breaking the rules may face financial penalties.
- We love to see adults and kids getting outside and exploring nature, but we need to leave native plants alone to protect them for others to enjoy and to keep our environments healthy.
