A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the JLC on Springvale Campus

Over the past two weeks, our JLC students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in swimming lessons. They’ve embraced the opportunity to build their water confidence and strengthen their swimming skills in a fun and supportive environment.

In Reading, students have been developing their comprehension strategies, with a focus on visualising and inferring. Through engaging with fiction texts, students are learning to create mental images, or a “movie in their minds”, to help them better understand the characters and events in the story. They are combining text clues with their prior knowledge to make inferences and deepen their understanding of what they read.

Over the past couple of weeks, the JLC students have focused on solving subtraction problems in Mathematics. They are developing a range of strategies, including counting back, finding the missing part, and recognising fact families to solve subtraction equations and real-life problems. They are also learning to apply their addition knowledge when solving subtraction problems, strengthening their overall number sense and problem-solving skills.

In Writing, students have been exploring persuasive texts. They are learning how to craft convincing arguments by using persuasive language and presenting clear reasons to support their point of view. It’s been wonderful to see students developing confidence in expressing their opinions through writing.

As part of our Projects unit, students have been learning about local history. They have discovered stories of influential people from the past, including William Barak, a respected Wurundjeri elder, artist, and activist, and George Burden, a Springvale store owner and local councillor. These lessons have helped students gain a deeper appreciation for the people who have shaped our local community.

We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort our JLC students continue to bring to their learning each day!
