What's On In 5/6

Grandparents' Afternoon

We excitedly welcomed some of our WPS grandparents into our classrooms on Monday afternoon. It was great to share a little about our school days with them and learn about their experiences at school too! Some of the activities 5/6 students took part in with their grandparents were:

  • Tour of our classrooms and school
  • Comparing and contrasting school from the past and present
  • Narrative writing about what school might look like in 2050
  • Performing Arts lessons (including an early sneak peak of our performances for carols later this term!)
  • Visual Arts lessons
  • Enjoying a bubble tea together

Thank you to all of the grandparents who were able to visit us this week. We look forward to more opportunities to share our learning and school life with you all.

Swimming Program

For two weeks our students had the opportunity to participate in a swimming program at AquaLink Nunawading. Across eight days they worked on swimming skills and had a fantastic time! One lesson was dedicated to understanding the importance of water safety in Australia. Our swimming program finished with a splash, as students enjoyed a celebratory lesson that included fun activities such as a ‘fireman’ relay race with a rubber duck and a tarzan rope. We’re so impressed with our students’ behaviour and effort during a very busy two weeks of swimming!

Water Safety Program

While everyone else was doing swimming lessons, some of us took part in water safety activities instead. We learned how to stay safe around water, help others in an emergency without putting our lives at risk. It was really fun,we got to talk about what to do at the pool, and  beach. One of the best parts was having extra play time but most of all is learning how to stay calm if someone needs help. We also talked about how important it is to always swim with an adult and never take risks around deep water. Even though we weren’t swimming, we still learned a lot, and had a great time working together!

While other students went to swimming lessons we stayed behind. We learned about water safety and how important it is to follow all the rules to keep ourselves safe in the water. We have been completing a grid with lots of fun activities that have taught us so much.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

This year in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden, we’ve had so much fun learning how to make delicious and easy dishes. The best part is picking fresh ingredients straight from the garden and using them in our cooking! Most kids have also been discovering what to grow in each season and planting all sorts of different plants, some we can eat and some that just make the garden look beautiful. We have loved learning about the chickens too, they are fun to take care of and feed. Ashley and Debroah have worked so hard to keep our garden beautiful and kitchen an exciting and tasty class to do!

This term throughout the kitchen and garden program we have made many things and done a lot. If we had to choose our favourite recipes, it would be the delicious pizza scrolls and the banana muffins. Our favourite roles in the garden would be doing the harvest and helping the chickens. We are both grateful we get to participate in the kitchen and garden program and have the opportunity to show our leadership skills.
