We have had a busy start to the term, with plenty of great learning! Students have picked up new routines with ease, and it is wonderful to see students taking pride in their learning and working with each other to help build understanding across different areas of the curriculum.  

📚 Literacy

This term our mentor text has been Are We There Yet? by Alison Lester.

We have made connections to the text by reflecting on holidays and trips we've been on with our families. Along the way we've been learning some new skills of writing... learning how to use apostrophes for possession, commas in a list, and time connectives to help our stories flow. Students are nearly ready to start our final edits, before publishing our finished pieces. It has been great to hear about many different travels, experiences and memories. 

In Word Origins, we've been detectives of language, digging into the Latin roots 'ject' and 'act'. We've had fun building brand new words from these roots and discovering the meanings hiding inside words we already knew. We've also been hard at work perfecting our joined handwriting, which is coming along beautifully. 

During our Word Origins session, students create sentences to help build meaning of the morphemes and roots. Our sentence structure is broken down into 'subject' and 'predicate', which is the who/what, and the doing or action. 

Holly: The crowd reacted to the loud show. 

Carter: The sealion and the moonwalk actions are incredibly tricky. 

Clay: The dance actions were really good. 

Chloe: The dance actions looked easy, but it was too hard for me. 

🔢 Numeracy

We've been building fluency with our multiplication facts for 1, 2 and 10, and adding new strategies to our maths toolkit, including vertical algorithms. We've also explored division using arrays and equal sharing, discovering how multiplication and division are connected as inverse operations. We have had many 'lightbulb moments' as students were starting to see the connections between multiplication and division. Students were able to recognise fact families, and how once we know one multiplcation fact, we can automatically recall 3 other facts that are related. 

We've been ticking off our multiplcation fact recall tracker, and students are eager to beat their time, and achieve their next set of facts. 

🌏 Integrated

We've turned our attention to our home, Australia! We've been learning about our statesand territories, and have started exploring the capital cities of our country, building our sense of where we live and how our nation fits together. 

It was fun to have a quick scroll around the world using Google Earth, and help paint a bit of a picture of just how large our country is compared to others. Students learnt about the history of our national anthem, and learnt about the three flags that we fly around the country. 

We also took a look into different climates around the globe, and how these are linked to the earth's rotation of the sun, and the imaginary line of the equator.
