Have you ever felt lots of different emotions but found it tricky to explain how you’re feeling? The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas is a beautiful story that helps children understand, recognise and talk about their emotions.
In the story, the Colour Monster feels all mixed up, and with the help of a friend, begins to explore and sort his feelings. Each emotion is represented by a different colour, helping children understand that happiness, sadness, anger, fear and calmness are all part of being human.
This wonderful book provides a gentle and engaging way to help children build their emotional vocabulary, develop self-awareness and understand that all feelings are okay.
It also reminds us that talking about our emotions can help us make sense of them and learn ways to manage them.
At Whittlesea Primary School, we know that supporting children in recognising and understanding their emotions is an important part of their wellbeing. When children feel safe to express their feelings, they can develop the confidence and resilience they need to navigate everyday challenges.
Our wellbeing tip: Take a moment to ask your child, “What colour are you feeling today, and why?” This simple question can open up a meaningful conversation about their day, help them share their feelings and remind them that you are always there to listen.
The Colour Monster is a lovely addition to any home or classroom bookshelf and a wonderful reminder that understanding our feelings is an important step towards understanding ourselves and others.

Have a lovely weekend.
