Lygon Street Excursion

On Thursday, 27 August, both Civics and Business classes travelled to the famous cultural business hub of Carlton to explore local businesses along Lygon street, accompanied by our Business Teachers Mr Molony and Mr Tomassini.  

During the excursion, we had the opportunity to interview local business owners and learn more about their business practices, challenges and experiences.  We asked them questions such as “Do you believe the customer is always right?” and “What do you do to stay competitive with other businesses?”  This provided us with valuable insight into how businesses operate within the local community and the factors that contribute to their success.   Afterwards, we enjoyed a sweet treat in the sun, soaking up the Italian flavour of Lygon Street.

Overall, it was an amazing experience that developed our understanding of what is needed to run a successful business that contributes positively to our community and local economy.

The Great Petition

On Wednesday, September 2nd, our Year 10 Women’s History class had the opportunity to visit The Great Petition sculpture at Burston Reserve, located just behind Parliament House.  This excursion was really interesting because it allowed us to see a physical representation of an important part of women’s history rather than simply learning about it in the classroom. 

The Great Petition is a 20-metre-long, white scroll-like sculpture that represents the original 1891 “Monster Petition”, which was signed by almost 30,000 Victorian women demanding the right to vote as part of the women’s suffrage movement in Victoria.  This was a crucial moment in the fight for women’s voting rights, as Victoria was the last Australian state to grant women the right to vote. 

The Monster Petition was also one of 19 applications presented to Parliament calling for Victorian women to be given the right to vote.  Seeing the sculpture in person helped me understand the scale of the movement and how many women were willing to come together and speak up for change.

Year 10 Maths Games Day

It was such a proud moment to see our Year 10 students —Riley A, Prytha I, Monika T and Josie V — representing the Academy so wonderfully at the Year 10 Maths Games Day at Trinity Grammar School, Kew, on 2 September.

Throughout the day, students took part in a range of problem-solving activities, maths games and a team relay before finishing with the presentation of awards.  It was fantastic to see our girls challenge themselves, think creatively, work collaboratively and meet like-minded students from other schools who also share an interest in Mathematics.

Most importantly, our students approached every activity with enthusiasm, put in a wonderful effort and had plenty of fun with Maths along the way. They supported one another, embraced the challenges and demonstrated a very positive attitude throughout the day.  Our girls represented the Academy exceptionally well, and I was incredibly proud of the way they conducted themselves.  Well done, girls — you should be very proud of yourselves!

Student Reflection

A group of four Year 10 students participated in the Maths Games Day.   When we arrived at Trinity Grammar, we gathered in the school's art centre, where the organisers introduced us to the layout of the day before we began out first game, "Corners", a 1v1 challenge against another school.  

After lunch, we returned for our second 1v1 game, "Fifteen", which tested our ability to think quickly and solve problems under pressure.  The day then moved into the relay, where our team worked through 20 questions, only moving on once each question had been completed correctly. 

With hundreds of high-ability maths students from schools across the state in the room, there was a strong sense of energy, friendly competition and teamwork.   The Maths Games gave me the chance to approach mathematics in a different way, challenge myself alongside students my age and meet new people who shared the same interest in problem solving.
