The Library Community mourns the passing of Dolly Parton, a leader not only in music but libraries.  Her Imagination Library reached millions of children, including those in Australia.  

We loved celebrating Book Week with our community. The theme of ‘Symphony of Stories’ was celebrated across the week.   Congratulations to the following winners:

Thank you to our wonderful performers for providing a symphony of sounds on the Friday at lunchtime.  Leilani D, Mailys N, Amélie D played for the MRC and can't thank them enough for sharing their amazing talents with us all. 

During the week artist Mirranda Burton, came to visit our Year 7 cohort. “Mirranda Burton is an inspiration to many students, especially those that like to draw, write or do both.  She has worked in many different creative fields and has worked with lots of interesting people that have contributed important details to all her graphic novels.  Mirranda Burton’s creative story starts when she was a child, her dad taught her to do lino cuts.  And her story has travelled up until now.  From working on 8mm film and plasticine to publishing her first graphic novel, Mirranda Burton has been working non-stop to follow her passion of the creative arts.  She is determined and won’t  give up.  She is not afraid to get your hands dirty to find the right story.  Her story leads her to Bangladesh, drawing what she sees from the crowded refugee camp and also to Vietnam to get a feel for the Vietnamese culture and the landscape.  Mirranda Burton’s life has been all creative action.  Child to adult, inexperienced to experienced she knows what she wants but then isn’t afraid to try new things.   Mirranda Burton is someone that people should admire.” -  Freya A, 7 Red

“Last Thursday, Year 7s had the opportunity to hear from artist and author Mirranda Burton.  I really enjoyed hearing about the many different ways she uses art and storytelling in her work.  She has worked with 8mm film and plasticine, worked on Disney films such as Brother Bear 2 and Cinderella 3, and even created comics about her experiences as a nanny.  One part of her talk that really stood out to me was hearing about her work with Medecins Sans Frontieres in Bangladesh, where she visited a Rohingya refugee camp and drew what she saw.  She explained that she couldn’t simply take photos of the people there, as it would not have been respectful, so she had to remember what she saw and draw from those memories.  I found this really interesting because it showed how important observation and memory can be in an artist’s work.  She also often works through interviews and then turns people’s stories and ideas into visual art. I also loved hearing about her graphic novel Underground.  I thought the illustrations of the wombats were so cute, and it was really interesting to learn about the real stories and different perspectives behind the book.  Her talk showed me that being an artist can involve much more than just drawing, and that art can be a powerful way to tell real stories and share people’s experiences.” - Caitlin C, 7 Blue 

This term we have welcomed Year 7 Health classes into the MRC to build on their research skills for their Puberty assignments.  We encourage all parents to take a look at the wonderful websites they have built.  Our Year 9 Science classes have also dropped in and completed some sessions for the Infectious Diseases assignments.  Our OPAC system is accessible through Compass, the star, and then clicking Library.  Students can access our suite of resources and ‘My Bibliography’ maker at home. 

Congratulations to Kitty S - 8 Blue, our MRC Student of the Term!   Kitty has been an absolute pleasure to have in the library this year, borrowing an impressive 21 books and showing enthusiasm for every activity on offer.  She's also a dedicated member of our weekly Book Club, bringing great energy and insight to every discussion.  Her positive attitude and genuine love of reading make her a wonderful role model for the whole school community.  Well done, Kitty — keep up the fantastic reading!
