Year 3/4 Team News

with Grace,Kayleen, Alison, Hayley, Katherine, Dianna & Christine

Hello Year  3/4 families,

It has been wonderful to see our students reconnect with their friends after the holidays and settle back into Term 4 so quickly and smoothly.

We have an exciting and fun-filled term ahead, kicking off with our much-anticipated annual school Disco. There is already plenty of excitement building, and we can’t wait to see the children dressed in their dancing outfits, ready for a fantastic night of music, dancing and fun together.

A friendly reminder that when collecting your child at 9.00 pm, you must check in with your child’s classroom teacher before leaving.

Another reminder that the Gr3/4 Zoo Snooze medical forms are due back too, even if your child has no medical issues to report, the form needs to be completed.

Literacy

During Weeks 3 and 4, we will continue our unit on Persuasive Writing, exploring the features and structure of persuasive texts. Students will practise crafting their own persuasive pieces by developing an engaging opening hook, clearly expressing an opinion and supporting their ideas with relevant evidence.

This term, we are reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and using this beautiful novel as a mentor text for a range of reading activities. Over the next fortnight, students will explore characters, their motivations and their behaviours. They will also practise visualising and inferring to deepen their understanding of the text and the characters’ experiences.

Numeracy

In Weeks 3 and 4, our learning will focus on Location and Angles.

Students will explore location through landmarks, maps and grid references. They will also investigate different types of angles, including right, acute, obtuse, straight and reflex angles, as well as full turns or revolutions.

Through hands-on activities and practical challenges, students will develop their understanding of these concepts and explore how they are used in everyday life.

Inquiry

Our Term 4 Inquiry focus is Endangered Animals and the ways we can help protect them.

Over the coming weeks, students will select an endangered animal to research throughout the term. They will have regular opportunities to gather information, identify key facts and summarise their findings. Through this inquiry, students will build their research skills while developing a greater understanding of the challenges facing endangered animals and how we can make a difference.

Willy Kids

Our Willy Kids focus for Term 4 is “Willy Kids are Responsible.”

Throughout the term, students will explore what it means to be responsible members of our school community. They will develop and practise strategies to help them:

  • Cooperate with others
  • Be accountable for their actions
  • Demonstrate honesty and integrity
  • Show leadership
  • Develop ambition and strive to achieve their goals
  • Reflect on their learning and celebrate their achievements

These skills will support students to take greater responsibility for their choices, learning and relationships with others.

Respectful Relationships

This term, our Respectful Relationships learning focuses on Stress Management.

Students will learn to identify and describe common stressors and explore a range of self-calming strategies to help them manage challenging or stressful situations. They will develop a better understanding of their emotions and practise ways to respond to stress in positive and healthy ways.

These strategies will help students build resilience, strengthen their emotional awareness and feel more confident when navigating everyday challenges.

Homework

Homework provides valuable opportunities for students to consolidate their learning and develop positive habits for lifelong learning.

Homework is distributed on Monday and is due back at school each Friday.

Weekly homework includes:

  • Reading – Read for at least 15 minutes on four nights each week. Students should record the titles of the books they have read on their homework sheet.
  • Mathematics – Play the number games introduced in class to strengthen number sense and revise learnt skills. This term, there is also a focus on learning multiplication facts:
    • Grade 3: 2s, 4s, 5s and 10s
    • Grade 4: all multiplication tables.
  • Spelling – Complete suggested activities using the words your child has selected.
  • Writing – Complete a short writing task in the Homework Book.

All students have a Homework Book to complete and return each week. If you have any questions or concerns about homework, please don't hesitate to contact your child's classroom teacher.
