VCE Food Studies Excursion to Deakin Uni
On 25 June, our Food Studies class travelled to Deakin University, and it was such a great chance to see our course content come to life outside the classroom.
In Lab 1, we got to try our hand at sensory evaluation - running descriptive and preference tests on different food samples.
One of the highlights was the red-light testing room, where the coloured lighting masked visual differences between samples, forcing us to rely purely on taste and smell rather than appearance to judge them. It really showed how scientists’ control for bias when evaluating food.
In the second Lab, we followed food "from paddock to plate," using real laboratory equipment and statistics to look at food waste, sustainability, packaging, and labelling.
Overall, it was a brilliant hands-on day, and we came away with a much better understanding of where Food Studies can lead!
