Numeracy

Big Idea Statement:

EQUIVALENCE: Any number, measure, numerical expression, algebraic expression, or equation can be represented in an infinite number of ways that have the same value.

The grade 5/6 students are finishing up the term with our Big Idea 3, they have focussed on decimals and fractions throughout this Big Idea and have shown incredible understanding. We will be completing our post test on this idea at the end of the week. Which will allow us to start Big Idea 4 at the start of next term.

In fluency, students are learning their 4 times tables, using the strategies of double/doubles and understanding that they are a pattern, ending in even numbers.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have completed our persuasive topic, using the mentor text ‘Rivet Boy’ as a guide. Students have worked extremely hard to get their writing pieces done before the end of the term and we can’t wait to be persuaded on 'Children as salve labour is a violation of basic human rights.' Next term we will be focussing on narratives, learning about the structure and language features using our new mentor text ‘The Silver Donkey,’ The Silver Donkey is a testament to bravery, loyalty and sacrifice. The collection of intriguing tales provides a gentle but unflinching look at the horrors of war as well as the power of innocence.’

Integrated Studies

Our Integrated Studies unit has come to an end. The students planned, researched, predicted and conducted their experiments. Students then presented their findings to the class. It was amazing to see all of the different experiments they came up with, we were very surprised with some of the results that were observed!
