Hatch Day: A Cracking Way to Finish Term 1!

Being in Prep can be hard work. Every day the Prep students are learning how to read, write, count, listen, share, and manage big feelings, all while remembering where their hat and drink bottle are! By the end of Term 1, brains are working hard and stamina can start to wobble, so I have introduced a fun way to support behaviour, engagement, and self-regulation in our classroom.

To help us stay focused and motivated right through to the end of the term, I have launched our “Hatch a Chick” Easter-themed behaviour management system, and the students are absolutely loving it.

 How It Works

Each student has coloured in and cut out their own egg, which is taped to their chair. Once this happens, they officially become Egg Caretakers (a very important job!).

  • When students are seated during learning time, they are “keeping their egg warm.”
  • When they need to leave their seat, they carefully push their chair in so the tub underneath becomes the egg’s “incubator.”
  • Staying seated during instruction and being responsible with their chair helps show they are caring for their egg.

The Countdown Is On!

We have a daily countdown to Hatch Day, giving students a clear goal to work towards. Each day the number changes, allowing students to visually see progress, building in early numeracy skills along the way.

Reflection & Responsibility:

Each day we also take time to reflect:

  • How did I care for my egg today?
  • Did I stay seated and engaged?
  • What can I do better tomorrow?

These daily self-evaluations help students develop self-awareness, accountability, and reflection skills, important foundations for lifelong learning.

The Big Question… Will They Hatch?

On Hatch Day, if students have been taking good care of their egg, something magical may happen…

There is a real sense of ownership and excitement in the room, and the students are highly motivated to stay engaged and regulated as we finish the term strong.

The Prep students all excited to see which eggs hatch at the end of the term! Thank you for supporting us as we continue to build independence, responsibility, and positive learning habits in our classroom. I wish you all a happy and safe Easter and hope to see everyone refreshed and ready to start again in Term 2!
