Year 3 - Year 6 Updates

Year 3

This past fortnight has been very busy! 

The Year 3 students have been learning about scientists and the important contributions they make to our world. We were incredibly lucky to welcome Ezra’s Aunty, Dr Mouna, who spoke to the students about her fascinating research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The students were inspired by her work and enjoyed learning about how scientists investigate problems, ask questions and work towards making a difference. 

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the different properties of 3D objects, including their faces, edges and vertices, and using mathematical language to explain how objects are alike and different. 

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, we have been exploring kindness, inclusion, empathy and the important role we all play in making our classroom and school a safe and supportive place for everyone.

Year 4

It has been another busy and exciting fortnight in Year 4! 

In Literacy, students have begun exploring the wonderful world of dragons and poetry, developing their descriptive language and experimenting with poetic techniques to bring their own dragons to life. We have enjoyed using our imaginations and building a bank of creative language that we will continue to develop throughout the unit. 

In Mathematics, our focus has been on angles, with students learning to identify, compare and describe different angles through a range of practical activities. Our Religion learning has focused on key figures within the Catholic Church, including Pope Leo XIV and St Mary MacKillop, and the important contributions they have made to the Church and wider community. We have also begun discussing an exciting Mini Vinnies initiative, with students considering how they can work together to support others within our school community.

Inquiry has been particularly hands-on as we continue our Chemical Sciences learning. Students have investigated changes and properties of materials through a range of experiments, including melting chocolate, creating colourful patterns with Skittles, and making marbled paper. There has been plenty of predicting, observing, questioning and of course excitement along the way!

We look forward to continuing our learning and seeing where our curiosity takes us next!

Year 5

Over the past fortnight, Year 5 has been busy with a range of exciting learning experiences. 

In Mathematics, students completed their unit on angles before beginning a new unit on decimals. This week, we took our learning outdoors with a secret-code decimal hunt. Students searched for cards hidden around the school grounds, each displaying a decimal number and a letter. Once the decimals were ordered from smallest to largest, the corresponding letters revealed a secret code.

We also welcomed athlete Dean Hewitt as part of our AIS Problem Solvers program, following our visit to the Australian Institute of Sport during our Canberra camp. Students worked collaboratively to solve a range of problems and enjoyed learning about Dean’s life and the dedication required to succeed in sport. 

In Religious Education, we learnt about the Feast of the Assumption and celebrated this important feast day together at our whole-school liturgy. 

This week, we are also taking part in Bullying No Way Week by listening to stories, completing activities and reflecting on how kindness, courage and supporting others can help create a safe and welcoming school community.

Year 6

Over the last two weeks, Year 6 have been focusing on measuring angles in Maths, using our knowledge of triangles and quadrilaterals to work out missing angles and looking at a formula to work out the interior angles of regular polygons. 

We have also been reading through our class novel Once by Morris Gleitzman - in addition to learning about war torn Poland in 1942, we have been researching Poland in order to write an informative report - creating a formal introduction followed by detailed paragraphs in order to inform readers of the culture, geography, history and tourism of Poland.

This week we have also been taking part in conversations and creative tasks based on Bullying No Way Week. We have been planning a dramatic act to show the positive effects of reflecting on bad decisions and showing small acts of kindness wherever we can.
