Prep - Year 2 Updates

Prep

This week has been very busy in Prep as we took part in our whole-school focus on bullying and positive relationships as part of Anti-Bullying Week.

During the week the students listened to stories, watched videos and role-played different scenarios to help them understand the impact their words and actions can have on others. We have worked on developing our skills and building positive relationships so that we can create a school where everyone feels safe, included and respected.

On Monday, the students also took part in their first live ‘Inform and Empower’ webinar incursion. The incursion covered the topic 'Safe Screen-Time' which focused on navigating the online world more safely. We explored how trusted adults can help us stay safe online.

During Mathematics, the students have been exploring the concepts of length, mass and capacity.  They have been developing their understanding of attributes such as long, short, tall, heavy and light through hands-on activities. They are beginning to make direct comparisons of length, mass and capacity and learning to identify, compare and order objects based on these attributes.

Year 1

This week the Year 1 students have been reflecting on their learning so far in Term 3 as they excitedly prepare for their assembly this Friday. In Little Learners, the focus sound we have been learning is /air/  /ere/ and /are/ all making the /air/ sound, as in hair, there and care. The students have also enjoyed working in small groups to create their own narrative story based on the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

In Mathematics, the students have been exploring identifying and labelling repeating patterns. They have enjoyed using physical resources to help them create their own repeating patterns.

In Religious Education, the students have been exploring the Holy Family and reflecting on the important role Mary plays in God’s plan. The students engaged in learning the Hail Mary and its meaning.

Year 2

Over the past fortnight, Year 2 has begun our new Mathematics unit on Shapes. Students have been learning about polygons, vertices and parallel sides, and exploring how we can classify shapes by their features, such as the number of sides, vertices or pairs of parallel lines.

In Little Learners, we have continued building our knowledge of suffixes. This week, students learnt that when a base word ends in y after a consonant, we change the y to i before adding vowel suffixes. For example: pony → poniescity → cities

During Inquiry, we have been investigating forces, including push and pull. Students explored the classroom to find objects that move using push or pull, and sketched their own designs for toys or games that use these forces. This week, we are beginning to look at how sound is made through vibrations.

We also took part in Bullying No Way Week, discussing how small acts of kindness can make a big difference to how someone feels. Students reflected on being brave, standing up to bullying and supporting their friends.
