On Wednesday the Year 1s and their families gathered together to learn about BAPTISM.
Baptism is the first sacrament.
It is a sacrament of initiation, followed by Eucharist and Confirmation.
A sacrament is a visible sign of God’s love and grace.
In Baptism, we are welcomed into the Catholic Church. As Fr Michael explained, it's like getting a membership to your favourite footy team. You're now part of the club!
Parents are the most significant people in nourishing a child’s faith however they need help, help from the catholic community and, more directly, help from Godparents who are chosen to assist parents with this task.
Faith is a gift from God that is encouraged by example and instruction; it is both lived and learned. When parents present their child for baptism, they are making a commitment to bring their child up as a loving member of our Christian community by loving God and their neighbour.
Parents are asked to give their child a name. When God says, “I have called you by your name. You are mine” it means He fully knows who we are and He claims us as His own
(Is. 43:1)Jesus calls you by name because He loves you He chose you, He wants you, He accepts you. It doesn’t matter how anyone else defines you. It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are saying to you. What matters is that God knows you (Psalm 139:1-4).
Jesus calls you by name. He delights in you. You are beautiful in His sight.
By being baptised we become sons and daughters of God. Our special relationship with God calls us to live the gospel values of love, forgiveness, compassion, hope and joy. We live these values out through our choices and interactions with one another. In this sense we are fulfilling Jesus’ new commandment, “that you love one another…just as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)
On the weekend the Yr 1 students and their families will gather to celebrate Mass together. We hope to see as many of our Yr 1 students as possible as well as anyone else who would like to join us in celebrating mass together.
