Welcoming the Changing Seasons

As we move through the changing seasons on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country, we have an opportunity to learn from the deep knowledge and connection to Country held by Wurundjeri people.

The Wurundjeri seasonal calendar recognises seven seasons, each marked by changes in the natural environment. Rather than being determined only by fixed dates, the seasons are observed through signs in Country, including changes in weather, plants, animals and waterways.

We have just entered poorneet (Tadpole season), which occurs from September to October. Rain continues but the weather becomes warmer. Flax lilies begin flowering. Murnong (yam daisies) are ready for harvesting and the day and night are equally long.

As the seasons change, we encourage our community to take time to notice and appreciate the changes occurring around us and reflect on the importance of caring for Country.
