5/6 CLASSROOM

We’ve had a great fortnight in the 5/6 room! Students have been flexible with changes to our routine and have embraced extra practice for our upcoming Under the Creative Hood performance.
Across our subjects, students have shown strength in their learning, adapting to new information and giving new challenges a go. It’s been lovely to see their positive attitude and willingness to keep learning.
English
In writing, we are building our knowledge of narrative structure by using the story mountain to plan our own fantasy stories, exploring how to introduce characters and settings, build a problem and bring the story to a satisfying resolution. The fantasy theme gives students plenty of opportunities to use their imaginations and develop creative ideas.
In SpellEx, we are using progress monitoring and end-of-term reviews to see how our spelling knowledge is developing and identify our next steps. Our recent focus has been on homophones, contractions and plurals, with students practising how to apply this knowledge in their everyday writing.
Our class novel is Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow, and while it is a challenging text, students are doing well as they work through the more complex parts of the story. Through our discussions, we are deepening our understanding of the characters and unfolding events while exploring how fantasy elements bring the world of Nevermoor to life.
Maths
We have finished our measurement unit and moved on to time, focusing on converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time in different contexts. Students have drawn on their solid understanding of time to make connections and build confidence with the new content.
Next, we will begin our data investigations, exploring how surveys help us gather information and how to organise and analyse the responses. Students will look at how the questions we ask can help us collect useful data and draw conclusions.
Inquiry
As part of our Changing Communities unit, we have been exploring a Rushworth icon—Ironbark Stadium—and considering how it meets the needs of the people who use it. Students discussed what they like about the facility and suggested changes that could make it an even better place for the community.
It was lovely to see students so engaged in learning about a local facility, sharing their ideas and considering how improvements could benefit different users.
Reader Diaries
A friendly reminder to keep up regular reading at home each night and record it in student diaries. Taking a few minutes to chat about what your child has read is also a lovely way to support their understanding. Thank you for your continued support in building these important reading habits.
AUSLAN
We have been learning about families in Auslan, practising signs such as mum, dad, sister and brother. Students have been putting these signs together to share who is in their family, as well as using fingerspelling and numbers to communicate names and ages. Working in pairs has given everyone a chance to take turns signing and watch carefully as their partner shares.
Alongside our signing practice, we have been exploring similarities and differences between our own families and Deaf families, helping us learn more about Deaf communities and their cultural values.
