F/1/2 Classroom

It has been a busy fortnight in the F/1/2 classroom! Students have continued developing their reading, writing and maths skills, with opportunities to work independently, in small groups and alongside their teachers.
Literacy
Our Foundation students have been learning the sounds ‘oo’ and ‘ng’ and practising using these when reading and spelling words. In writing, they have explored procedures and recounts, learning how to put their ideas into sentences.
Grade 1 students have been exploring different letter combinations, including ‘eer’, ‘air’ and ‘are’, and learning how ‘c’ can make an /s/ sound in words such as city. They have also been practising their tricky words and developing their sentence writing.
Grade 2 students have been learning about contractions and how speech marks show when a character is speaking. They have been applying their reading strategies during comprehension activities and practising editing their writing for correct punctuation.
Together, we have enjoyed reading Harry by the Sea and The Story about Ping, discussing the characters and events. Grade 2 students have also continued exploring George’s Marvellous Medicine.
Mathematics
Foundation students have been making and identifying equal groups, before moving into ordinal numbers and describing positions in a sequence.
Grade 1 students have been making equal groups, skip counting and arranging objects into arrays. They are also exploring how sharing and grouping can help them solve problems.
Grade 2 students have been applying their knowledge of the four operations to solve mathematical problems. They are also exploring halves of collections using arrays. Regular assessments are helping us check students’ understanding and plan their next steps.
Religion
We have been learning about how Jesus welcomed and cared for others. Through stories and discussions, students have explored how every person is special and how we can show kindness and care in our classroom.
F-2 Auslan Week 2 and 3
Over the past fortnight in Auslan, the F-2 students have been focusing on colours and pets. They have been learning key signs and applying this knowledge through signed directions colouring and guess the animal games.
Handwriting Week 2 and 3
During handwriting this fortnight, the F-1 students have focused on correct formation and sizing for the letters v and b (open lowercase formation). They have also been focusing on building their fine motor skills through finger taps and developing correct body and paper position for prolonged writing.
Under the Creative Hood – In Here and Out There
We have been busy rehearsing for our Under the Creative Hood performance, In Here and Out There, which will take place next Friday in Week 4! With extra practices and changes to our usual classroom schedule, the students have been incredibly adaptable. I am so proud of the patience, flexibility and enthusiasm they have shown. We can’t wait to share their hard work with you!
Reminders
Please continue to send reader bags and diaries to school on Mondays. Please also ensure your child has their hat at school each day for outdoor play.
Thank you for your continued support with reading at home.
We look forward to seeing you at our performance next Friday!
