Hockey

Congratulations to two outstanding students from our College who have been selected for the Hockey Tasmania State Under 18 Boys Team. Year 10 student athlete Hamish McGuire and Year 11 standout Trent Smith will represent our state at the upcoming National Championships, which will take place in the vibrant city of Darwin from July 3 to July 11.

Hamish McGuire, has also recently been selected in the U16 Boys Hockey Australia National Squad, following an outstanding performance for Hockey Tasmania as goalkeeper at the recent U16 National Championships in Hobart.

These achievements are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport. Congratulations to both boys on these remarkable accomplishments! We wish them the best of luck as they compete at the national and international level!

Sailing

Congratulations to Team sVc for securing 10th place in the 2026 SB20 Tasmanian Schools Championships last Saturday on the River Derwent.

A special thank you to Old Virgilians Paul McCartney and Matt Cubit, who helped get the sVc-owned SB20 out of hibernation and ready for racing. The event was an incredible experience for students Lachlan Barr, Leo Bufton, and Will Morice, who were joined on board by the College's Sailing Development Coach and helm, Charlie Pavlides.

We look forward to more SB20 opportunities in the future. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible.

Tennis

Student shoutout to Year 10 Charlie Marsden!

Charlie has just returned home from a week in Perth, where he represented Tasmania at the JC Pizzey Cup. As the line 1 player for Tasmania, Charlie played impressive tennis against the other line 1 players from across the country, contributing significantly to the Tasmanian team’s great victory over the ACT.

The Pizzey Cup is a prestigious national schools tennis championship open to boys and girls aged 18 and under. It provides secondary school students with the opportunity to represent their state in teams of eight players and compete against the best players from other states across Australia.

Additionally, Charlie has been selected to represent Tasmania in the upcoming Australian Team Championships on the Gold Coast in late June.

Well done, Charlie!

Rugby

The countdown has begun for the inaugural SATIS Rugby Competition, starting this Friday at the University Rugby Oval in Sandy Bay.

With both non-contact Tri Tag and contact rugby options available, every student has the opportunity to get involved. This is a significant milestone for the game in Tasmania. Through this program, more than 400 Tasmanian High School students will be introduced to Rugby, learning the game, building confidence, and becoming part of the Rugby community.

We extend our gratitude to Play Rugby (Rugby Australia), the Tasmanian Rugby Union, and the Future Legacy Rugby Fund for providing a Rugby Starter Kit valued at $1,500. This kit will help St Virgil's Rugby meet the training needs of our boys.

Now is the perfect time to give rugby a try and be part of the first SATIS season. For more information, visit the SATIS website at https://satis.com.au/sports/rugby/

or reach out to SVC Rugby Coordinator Mr. Dave Sanderson or Sports Coordinator Mr. Tom Briggs.
