What a busy week in Garden Class!

We’ve been preparing the senior learning space by adding gypsum to the soil, getting everything ready for some autumn planting. We’re hoping that improving the soil structure will lead to better outcomes for our plants and, in the long run, contribute to a thriving garden.

Gardening also brings plenty of incidental maths and science into our learning. The Grade 5 and 6 students worked hard to calculate how much gypsum was needed for the garden beds. Without scales, we got creative—using a litre of water and a bit of hefting to estimate a kilogram of gypsum to apply to each square metre of soil.

We’ve also been preparing our wicking beds for our cold-weather crops. The garden might start looking a little bare for now, but in a few months it will be flourishing with winter produce.
