School Chaplain's Message

Assalaamu Alaykum WRWB,
As we enjoy the long days of summer, many students find themselves with a well-deserved break from school. While summer holidays offer the chance for rest and relaxation, it’s important to reflect on how we use this free time and to appreciate the blessings we have, especially the gift of good health and time. These two blessings are often taken for granted, yet they hold immense value in our lives. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spoke about both of these blessings in a hadith that can serve as a reminder for us all during the summer holidays.
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “There are two blessings which many people lose: good health and free time.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Good health is one of the greatest blessings that we can have. Without good health, even the most beautiful opportunities and successes in life can lose their value. Many people, particularly the young, often overlook their health, thinking that they have plenty of time to worry about it later. However, the Prophet (PBUH) reminded us that health is something we should cherish and protect. During the summer holidays, it’s a perfect time to establish healthy habits whether it’s through regular physical activity, eating nutritious food, or simply getting enough rest. Summer can be a time to engage in outdoor activities, whether that means playing sports, walking in nature, or spending time with family and friends. These activities not only improve physical health but also contribute to mental and spiritual well-being. When we are healthy we are able to pursue our goals and dreams. So, let’s take a moment to appreciate our good health, and remember that it’s a gift we should nurture.
Free time is another great blessing that the Prophet (PBUH) mentioned. In today’s fast-paced world, we are often busy with school, extracurricular activities, or other responsibilities. But during summer, students often find themselves with more time on their hands. While it’s tempting to spend all of this time on entertainment or social media, the Prophet (PBUH) encourages us to use our time wisely. Free time can be an opportunity to learn new skills, read books, pursue hobbies, and volunteer in the community. It’s also a time to strengthen our connection with our Creator through acts of worship, prayer, and reflection. Instead of wasting time, we can use it in ways that enrich our lives and benefit those around us.
The Prophet (PBUH) also reminds us that this world is short, and time is precious. We may not always have the luxury of free time, so it’s important to make the most of it when we do. Instead of spending hours scrolling through our phones, we can spend time with family, engage in creative projects, or help others. Time used well brings blessings both in this life and the Hereafter.
As you enjoy your summer holidays, remember that both good health and free time are valuable gifts. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that these are blessings that many people lose without realising their importance. This summer, make a commitment to take care of your health, use your time wisely, and appreciate the blessings you have. By doing so, you not only enrich your own life but also set a positive example for others.
May we all learn to cherish and make the best use of our time and health, for in these blessings lie the foundation of a fulfilling and beneficial life.
