Literature at Hanging Rock

This week, Year 11 and 12 VCE Literature classes had the opportunity to experience the mystique and magic of Mt Macedon as they headed to the unique geological marvel that is central to Joan Lindsay’s iconic Australian Gothic novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock.

The brooding atmosphere of the novel was certainly evident in the alluring landscape we explored. As we reached the summit weaving through treacherous heights and howling winds, we felt microscopic within the trepidatious bush environment.

Through our tour guide, Shane, we also learned about the volcanic phenomenon that is the rock, including how it sustains various ecosystems and the miracle of its formation, being one of the few of its kind in the world.

Following the climb, we concluded the day with homemade delights of cake and lemonade, mimicking the frivolity of the Appleyard College schoolgirls and their decadent picnic before horror would ensue. Luckily, we all managed to come back safe from the excursion!
