FAITH MATTERS

MRS ALISON WRIGHT - DIRECTOR OF FAITH & MISSION

Habemus Papem - We have a new Pope!

On May 8, 2025, the Catholic Church announced the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first pope from the Augustinian Order and the first U.S.-born pontiff. His election has been met with enthusiasm and hope by Australian Catholics, who view his leadership as a continuation of the Church's commitment to social justice and unity.

Pope Leo XIV's choice of name pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, renowned for his 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which laid the foundation for modern Catholic social teaching by addressing the rights and dignity of workers. This nod to tradition underscores Pope Leo XIV's dedication to social justice and the Church's role in advocating for the marginalised.

In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the world with the simple yet profound blessing, "Peace be with all of you." Delivered in both Italian and Spanish, this message reflects his commitment to fostering unity and compassion across diverse cultures and communities.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his pontificate, Australian Catholics join the global community in praying for his leadership to be marked by wisdom, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the Gospel's call for justice and peace. His unique background and dedication to dialogue position him to guide the Church through contemporary challenges while honouring its rich traditions.

Year 8 & 9 Reflection Days

On Tuesday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 7th, our Year 8 and 9 students were involved in a Reflection Day, facilitated by the Passionist Youth Retreat Team.

The Passionist Youth Retreat Team was founded in 2001 by The Passionist Fathers. These retreats aim to bring meaningful and thought-provoking experiences. Our students were fully engaged over the two days and from the feedback received, this experience was very valuable. We hope to engage with this team again in the future.

Looking ahead, as a community we will celebrate Catholic Education Week from May 26th - 30th. The annual CESH Mass will be celebrated at our school this year (in the Jubilee Centre) on Friday, May 30th beginning at midday. All families are warmly invited to attend. A shared lunch will be provided for all staff and students on the grounds of the school. We are looking forward to gathering together again to recognise and celebrate Catholic Education in Swan Hill (CESH).

During Catholic Education Week, we will be launching the annual food collection for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Over many years our school community has been very generous with their donations, which have been gratefully received by needy families in our local community. I encourage members of our school community to once again, be generous with their giving.

Prayer for our new Pope

Lord, we bring before You our newly elected Pope.

Bless him with wisdom, courage, and compassion

as he leads the Church in a spirit of humility and service.

May his words and actions reflect Your love and inspire unity, hope, and faith across the world. Help us all to listen, to care, and to be instruments of Your peace,

just as he strives to be.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Jesus light of the world, guide us

St Joseph, journey with us

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us
