PATHWAYS REPORT
MRS SALLY LOONEY & ANNA STEICKE
The students of 10A recently took part in a week of work experience, where they got to try out different jobs and see what it's like to work in various fields. They spent time in places like hospitals, primary schools, allied health and the engineering industry. From this opportunity they learned valuable skills that will benefit them in the future as well as picking their subjects for 2026.
We would like to thank all the businesses that gave our students a work experience opportunity and look forward to working with them again throughout the year.

For my work experience I went to two places, St Mary’s Primary School Swan Hill and Mallee Physio. On Monday and Tuesday, I was at St Mary’s Primary School with a lot of the P.E. classes. I enjoyed working with the grades 3 to 5 the most because I feel that they were the perfect age to teach. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I went to Mallee Physio. On the first two days there, I was with an exercise physiologist, where we did a lot of physical therapy in the pool. On my last day there, I went into a lot of the rooms where they did a lot of the massages and some tests. I enjoyed the physical therapy in the pool and going into all the rooms and learning more about the body

For my work experience, I had the opportunity to go to Swan Hill North Primary School and Swan Hill Specialist School. At Swan Hill North, I worked as an Learning Support Officer (LSO), answering questions and helping kids with their maths and English. I started with the older students, and by my last day I worked with the younger ones, seeing amazing changes in the classroom. I loved working with the kids and learning what it's like from a teacher's point of view.
At the Specialist School I found it rewarding because I enjoy being around the kids. I would like to thank all the staff members at both schools for making it a warm and welcoming place.

I completed work experience at Swan Hill District Hospital. I am very grateful for the opportunity to gain workplace skills and knowledge of this field of work. I found the environment of this workplace very inclusive, respectful, and positive.
I started my day walking over to the education centre and meeting up with everyone and then got taken over to where I would be working for that day. During the week, I had the chance to learn about a spread of different areas. I learnt so much during my work experience, and I thank my supervisor for sharing their different careers with me. I thoroughly enjoyed my week of work experience and would like to say a big thank you to the Swan Hill District Hospital.

I completed my Year 10 work experience at Swan Hill District Health. I am very grateful and would like to thank the school and the hospital for the opportunity. I worked at a bunch of different places at the hospital such as OT in the sub-acute ward on Monday, hand therapy on Tuesday, OT in the acute ward for Wednesday, Physio on Thursday and finally exercise physiology on Friday. But the one that stood out to me was easily doing Physio on Thursday. I’ve always had a keen interest in physio and would like to hopefully go down that path in the future.

I completed my work experience at Swan Hill District Health to do nursing. In 5 work days, I got to experience Logan Lodge, acute ward, emergency department and sub-acute. All of those parts are really meaningful to me and I got to learn a lot of new and useful things in the medical field.

I worked at the Swan Hill hospital in the kitchen. I helped make food and sweets for the old people or sick people. My best experience was cooking lasagne.

I completed my work experience at Swan Hill Primary School with a PE teacher and at Central Mallee Health. I am grateful for this opportunity to be able to learn new skills in education and dive deeper into the anatomy of osteopathy. I enjoyed most out of my week working with the younger primary school kids and being able to get involved in the activities. I played a mixture of fitness activities and all the kids were eager and a pleasure to work with. This helped me decide I definitely want a future working with kids. The Central Mallee Health osteopaths taught me a lot about the human body and how to treat different pains. We focused more on muscular injuries and what rehabilitation they needed to get better. I enjoyed using the shock wave machine and watching the needle and cupping.
Overall I am very happy at my time with both places and see myself in either of them as a future career. I would like to thank Swan Hill Primary and Central Mallee Health for allowing this opportunity for me.

I completed my Year 10 work experience at 3 different UniSA Health and Medical Clinics (City West, City East, and Elizabeth). I started work each morning at 8:30am and was then shown to my supervisor for that day. I was able to sit in on a couple of sessions that worked on back pain and shoulder pain. I enjoyed observing and learning about MSK Physiotherapy. On Wednesday, I was in Exercise Physiotherapy and loved it. I was able to sit and observe a few 1 on 1 sessions, which focused on gaining/regaining strength and balance. I was then fortunate enough to watch a group session that a couple of the students led and see how those patients don’t need as much guidance as the 1 on 1 sessions do. Exercise Physio was definitely a highlight for the week and something that I might pursue in the future. I discovered some subjects that would be helpful if I wanted to become an exercise physiologist, and they included biology, psychology, PE, and health.

I completed my Year 10 work experience as an Exercise Physiologist with Milly Op’t Hoog. I am extremely grateful to Milly for giving me the opportunity to do work experience with her. Milly did a great job of always keeping me engaged in every session, she would always explain her thinking out loud which kept me informed of what her process with her clients liked like. Milly and I worked with sporting injuries, helping the elderly keep their exercise up and worked with a lot of chronic disease. Milly’s goal as an Exercise Physiologist is not always to cure the client but improve their quality of life, which was one thing I learnt about the profession. Milly taught me so much about not just Exercise Physiology but multiple health professions. During my work experience I discovered I would definitely love to pursue a career in the Health and Fitness field.
