Year One

Scientists in Action!
Our Year One scientists have been busy exploring the fascinating world of materials, and discovering how science helps us understand the world around us - through our 'Properties of Materials' sequence of learning.
We began by learning what it means to be a scientist. Through asking questions, making observations and investigating everyday objects, students discovered that materials have different properties. We explored scientific vocabulary such as rough, smooth, flexible, rigid, transparent and opaque, using our senses to describe and compare the materials around us.
We then put on our scientist hats for some exciting hands-on investigations! We explored what happens when different liquids and materials are mixed together, making predictions, testing our ideas and carefully observing the results. Would the materials mix together evenly, or would they remain separate? Our young scientists investigated, recorded their observations and used their new scientific vocabulary to explain what they discovered.
Throughout our learning, students have been developing their curiosity, making thoughtful predictions, sharing ideas and discovering that scientists learn by asking questions, testing ideas and observing what happens.
It is exciting to see our students’ confidence grow in thinking, talking and investigating like scientists!
