Carlsruhe Annexe /
Main Campus - Year 4
Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed a restful and fun holiday break with your families.
Year 4 students have hit the ground running and we are now almost two weeks into term.
In exciting news, we have welcomed 6 ISA Brown chickens to Carlsruhe! Our new feathered friends have settled in beautifully and we have even already been gifted some eggs for the first time in a while. In the coming weeks we will work collaboratively to come up with some interesting names and somehow find a way to distinguish between them!

In Literacy, we have been learning to distinguish between facts and opinions and identifying persuasive techniques that authors use to support their opinions. We are developing the skills to write a persuasive piece of writing about an environmental issue that they are passionate about. This will link in with our inquiry unit “How can rules and laws change how we act and think about waste management?” Students will support their arguments by using relevant facts and opinions, objective and subjective language, rhetorical questions, alliteration and emotive vocabulary.
In Maths, our focus for the coming weeks is on multiplication. Students are working on recalling multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 with accuracy and fluency. We are also working on developing efficient mental and written strategies for solving problems with larger numbers without using a calculator.
We really encourage students to make reading a daily practice at home. It is such a lovely way to wind down at the end of the day before bedtime. As a reminder, students have access to a Reading Log on Google Classroom that they are encouraged to fill in and keep a record of their reading.
Students are also encouraged to practise their times tables at home. While we are teaching strategies, it is helpful to have some easy recall of multiplication facts. Printing a list and sticking it on the toilet door is one idea! We will also provide links to some websites on Google Classroom for students to access if they would like some extra practice.
Towards the end of this term, 4BE will transition back to main campus for the remainder of the year. This means 4AD head back out to Carlsruhe to join 4KR.
We are looking forward to a busy term ahead!
