Mathslympics & Family Maths Night      Wednesday 19 August 2026

We are excited to announce that Wednesday 19 August will once again be one of the highlights of the school year as Woodend Primary School celebrates our annual Mathslympics Day followed by our much-loved Family Maths Night.

Mathslympics Day

Throughout the school day, students from Prep to Year 6 will work together in mixed-age House teams to participate in a variety of exciting, hands-on mathematical challenges. Each activity has been designed to develop students' mathematical thinking while promoting teamwork, communication, problem-solving and strategic thinking in a fun and engaging environment.

Students are encouraged to wear their House shirts and House colours and join in the friendly competition as they help their House compete for the prestigious Joan's Shield. The day will begin with a colourful Opening Ceremony, before students rotate through eight engaging mathematical activities, earning points for their House along the way. The winning House will be announced at the following whole-school assembly. The event follows the successful format of previous Mathslympics days, with students working together in mixed-age House teams to develop the four mathematical proficiencies of Fluency, Understanding, Reasoning and Problem Solving through fun, collaborative challenges.

Please note that Mathslympics Day is a student and staff event only. Due to space limitations, we are unfortunately unable to accommodate families during the school-day activities. Please don't worry though—we'll be taking plenty of photos throughout the day and look forward to sharing these with our community. We can't wait to welcome everyone back that evening for Family Maths Night!

Family Maths Night

Families are warmly invited to join us for Family Maths Night, running from approximately 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

This special evening is a wonderful opportunity for parents, carers and students to experience the joy of mathematics together. Every learning area will host a range of engaging, hands-on games and activities that families can enjoy together. Many of the activities use simple materials that can easily be recreated at home, allowing the mathematical learning to continue long after the evening has finished.

The evening will begin with a short presentation in the Hall before families move into classrooms to participate in a variety of interactive number games, problem-solving challenges and estimation activities. There will also be estimation competitions with prizes to be won, and every family will receive a booklet of the games to take home. The focus of the evening is simple—to show that mathematics can be fun, engaging and something the whole family can enjoy together.

We are incredibly excited to once again bring our school community together for this fantastic celebration of mathematics. We look forward to seeing all of our families at 6:00 pm on Wednesday 19 August for what promises to be another memorable Family Maths Night!
