‘Watch Out – Safe Zone’ Contest Award Ceremony

Doncaster Secondary College was proud to host the “Watch Out – Safe Zone” Contest Award Ceremony—a community-focused event that celebrated creativity, student leadership, and the promotion of safety. Held in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch Manningham, the event recognised outstanding artwork by students and staff, all centred around key messages of community safety and crime prevention.

The ceremony brought together award recipients, members of the Principal Team, representatives from Neighbourhood Watch, the Manningham Police Force, and the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Team to honour the winners and their meaningful contributions.

Two of our outstanding student leaders, Meyly (Elly) TE, 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Ambassador, and Elyse VAN DER MEI, 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Leader, confidently stepped into the role of Masters of Ceremony (MCs). Their professionalism, leadership, and poise reflected the values of our school community.

As MCs, Elly and Elyse warmly welcomed guests, introduced speakers, and announced award recipients. Their reflections on the experience highlight the personal growth, sense of responsibility, and pride they felt in contributing to such a meaningful event.

“Through this experience, I developed confidence in public speaking, strengthened my event coordination skills, and learned how to engage a formal audience. It was rewarding to recognise the creative efforts of participants and see how art can spread powerful community messages. I’m proud to have contributed to such a meaningful initiative and represent the Student Voice team in promoting school and community values.”– Meyly (Elly) TE

“Being an MC for such an important event was also a unique learning experience. I had a chance to chat briefly with a member of the Police Force, who shared insights into how community involvement, like this contest, aids their work in keeping our neighbourhoods safe. My contributions included preparing and delivering the introductory and closing remarks and ensuring all the key messages about safety and community were clearly conveyed.”– Elyse VAN DER MEI

Members of the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Team shared their thoughts and reflections on being part of this special event:

‘During the preparation for the Watch Out – Safe Zone contest, we received helpful advice from Manningham NHW, such as renaming the contest and separating awards by year levels to ensure fairness. I also helped promote the event by putting up posters around the school and encouraged my friends and classmates to enter the contest. It was rewarding to see students and teachers enjoy the contest and create such impressive artworks.’ -Junyu (William) YAN

‘Watching students and staff come together to create street art that promotes community safety made me feel genuinely happy and hopeful. The artworks showed that keeping our community safe doesn’t always require forceful measures like deploying night guards—it can start with something as simple as a paintbrush.

This competition also strengthened community connections, bringing students and staff closer and helping to build more meaningful relationships.

The success of the project was made possible by the dedication and teamwork of all members of the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice. This experience has inspired me to continue being involved in projects that unite people and make a positive impact.’ - Kuysing (Kyle) TE

Neighbourhood Watch Secretary, Mr Ian Morris, and DSC Assistant Principal, Ms Belinda McGee, also delivered inspiring speeches during the ceremony. Belinda has kindly agreed to share her speech with our DSC community:

‘Good afternoon, everyone, It’s a real pleasure to be here today to celebrate the winners of the ‘Watch Out – Safe Zone’ Contest — an inspiring initiative that has brought together creativity, community spirit, and a strong message about safety and crime prevention.

This project, proudly led by our International Student Program in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch Manningham, has given our students and staff a unique platform to express their voices through street art-style illustrations. The powerful designs we received not only demonstrate incredible artistic talent but also reflect a deep understanding of what it means to care for and contribute to a safe and inclusive community.

To all our winners — congratulations! Your work stood out for its creativity, clarity of message, and community relevance. You’ve made a real impact, and your efforts deserve to be celebrated.

A heartfelt thank you to our judging panel for generously giving their time and expertise, and to our amazing 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Project Team — Elly, Kyle, Peter, Madison, Elyse, and William — for your leadership and dedication in bringing this initiative to life.

International Student Ambassador Program

🌏 Introducing Our New International Student Ambassadors

The International Student Program (ISP) at Doncaster Secondary College is excited to announce a new initiative – the International Student Ambassador Program.

This program provides an opportunity for international students who consistently demonstrate the DSC values to the highest standard and are eager to make a positive difference within our school community.

After a careful selection process, the International Student Program (ISP) is proud to announce our first-ever International Student Ambassadors: Junyu (William) Yan, Zian (Mia) Gao, Tsz Wai (Josephine) Kung, and Boxuan (Danny) Wang.

These four outstanding students were selected for consistently demonstrating the DSC values to the highest standard and for their eagerness to contribute meaningfully to the school community. Each ambassador brings unique strengths, experiences, and enthusiasm to the role, and they will play a vital part in supporting and promoting the ISP.

As International Student Ambassadors, their responsibilities include:

✔ Welcoming and supporting new international students as they adjust to school life

✔ Assisting with the International Student Orientation Program

✔ Promoting inclusiveness and positive cultural exchange across the school

✔ Developing leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

✔ Representing both the International Student Program and the wider DSC community with pride

Since stepping into their roles, our ambassadors have embraced their responsibilities with great enthusiasm, already contributing to a range of activities and support initiatives.

In Their Own Words

Zian (Mia) Gao:

“I’ve helped run weekly Buddy Program sessions, from setting up activities to making sure everyone feels welcome and included. I’ve also assisted in preparing orientation packages for new students so they have all the information they need to settle in quickly. One of my favourite parts is being a buddy for newly arrived international students—showing them around, answering their questions, and checking in on their academic and social wellbeing.

I especially enjoy running the Buddy Program because it helps new students feel comfortable and connected. Sometimes the school provides snacks, which makes it easier for everyone to relax, chat, and bond. In the future, I’d like to create more opportunities for new students to share their culture with the school—introducing traditions, games, music, and food from their home countries. This would be a fun and meaningful way to build friendships and make everyone feel proud of their identity.

Being an ambassador has allowed me to support others while growing my own confidence, leadership skills, and cultural understanding.”

Junyu (William) Yan:

“As part of the team, I’ve assisted in orienting new students, supported and hosted weekly Buddy Program sessions, and helped prepare orientation package documents. Being a buddy myself allowed me to make friends with people from different backgrounds while helping them settle in. I know how important it is to feel welcomed when entering a new environment.

I believe it would be helpful to organise support sessions for new international students in difficult subjects, so those who are confident in certain areas can share their knowledge and help others overcome academic challenges.”

Tsz Wai (Josephine) Kung:

“We welcomed new international students when they first arrived at DSC and helped them feel at home. I help run the weekly Buddy Program sessions every Thursday and organise activities so new students can make friends and feel part of the community. I also helped prepare orientation packages for new students in 2026, which include important information about the school and local area.

In the future, I would like to organise more craft competitions. These would give students an opportunity to showcase their creativity and connect with others in a fun way.”

Boxuan (Danny) Wang:

“As an international student, I help new students adapt to the school environment. Having studied here for a year, I know many details—big and small—that can make a difference. For example, helping new students find their classrooms is an important part of what I do.

In the future, I’d like to see more lunchtime games organised. This would make school more fun, help build relationships, and give everyone the chance to make new friends.”

Through this initiative, our ambassadors are not only helping create a more connected and inclusive school environment but also developing valuable life skills that will serve them well into the future.

International Student Learning Hub Hosts Orientation Day

A Warm Welcome to Our New International Students

The start of Term 3, 2025 brought a wonderful new chapter to our school community, as we opened our doors to five bright and determined international students. Hailing from China and South Korea, they arrived ready to embrace new experiences, learn in a different cultural setting, and share their own stories with us.

Their first official day was filled with both excitement and discovery. Our International Student Program hosted a full-day orientation, designed not just to introduce classrooms and timetables, but to make every newcomer feel at home. From campus tours to interactive activities, the day helped them understand school life, make friends, and feel confident about the term ahead.

Much of this warm welcome was made possible thanks to our international student leaders and buddies, who stepped up to guide, encourage, and connect with our new arrivals. Their patience, kindness, and genuine enthusiasm reflect the spirit of our community.

Special thanks also go to Principal Glenn and Assistant Principal Belinda, whose personal greetings and warm conversations with students and their families set the tone for the supportive relationships we value so highly.

This term also marked the launch of our Buddy Program—an initiative designed to bring local and international students together. It was heartening to watch conversations spark, laughter fill the air, and the first threads of lifelong friendships begin to weave.

We are excited to see how our newest students will grow—both in their studies and in the friendships they form. With the encouragement of our teachers, leaders, and peers, we know they will not only adapt but flourish, adding their own unique colours to the rich tapestry of our school life.

Student Reflection – Buddy Program & Orientation Day

I’m so glad to have started my studies at Doncaster Secondary College this week. On my first day, Ms Huang introduced me to Elyse, a friendly girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. She has one brother and one sister and enjoys K-pop and listening to music in her free time. Elyse kindly showed me to my classroom and made me feel welcome. On Tuesday, I met my second buddy, Mia from Beijing. She speaks excellent English and has many local friends. Every morning, she meets me at the International Students Learning Hub, guides me to class, and gives me tips on communicating with teachers. I really admire her and see her as a role model. Later, I was paired with Judy, who is from my hometown of Shanghai and in the same class as me. She is quiet but always ready to help, often translating for me so I can understand lessons better. Her independence inspires me. I feel lucky to have three such kind and supportive buddies.

One highlight of the first day was tasting multicultural snacks—my favourite was the coconut-flavoured lollies, which reminded me of home in Shanghai.

Orientation included learning the visa conditions, school map, timetable, and rules. We toured the campus, visited the library, and borrowed books.

It was truly an unforgettable first day, and I am grateful for such caring teachers, leaders, and classmates. I look forward to learning and growing here at DSC. – Guqin (Grace) Xu

On my first day at DSC, I felt nervous until I met my buddy, Satia. We discovered we share many interests, including a love for summer, music, and sports. Snack time was a highlight, with my favourite being sweet purple jelly. I was also warmly welcomed by the principals, explored the library, learned school rules, and found my way around. My first week at DSC has been wonderful. My buddy, Yolanda, is friendly and helpful—we often talk about hobbies, snacks, and schoolwork. I enjoyed trying salt and vinegar chips during snack time. I’m excited to study hard and learn more in the future. – Annie Hu

Introducing Zian (Mia) Gao – Year 9D

The 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Team at Doncaster Secondary College is excited to welcome its newest member, Zian (Mia) Gao. Mia shares her inspiring journey and the experiences that led her to join the team:

“I decided to join the International Student Forum Team because I believed it would be a fantastic opportunity to connect with people from around the world and contribute to a platform that supports international students. Since I enjoy learning and always strive to do my best in my studies, I also wanted to grow by becoming more involved in the school community.”

Mia has embraced many opportunities at DSC. One of her highlights has been performing in the school band as a drum player:

“Being part of the band has given me a creative outlet and the chance to work closely with others. Performing at school events has helped me build confidence and share positive energy through music—it’s been a great way to feel more connected to the school.”

Another experience close to her heart is the International Student Buddy Program:

“When I first joined the school, the buddy program made me feel welcomed and supported. Now, I’ve had the chance to give back by helping host the program. Leading games and activities helped new students connect, and it’s been so rewarding to see friendships form and know I played a part in helping others settle in.”

Through her involvement in the Global Learning Student Voice Team, school band, and buddy program, Mia has shown the spirit of leadership, inclusion, and community.

“These experiences have taught me the value of giving back, embracing cultural diversity, and building a supportive school environment. I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow while helping others—just as I was once supported.”

Student Spotlight –William Yan’s Passion for Badminton

At Doncaster Secondary College, we pride ourselves on supporting our students to discover their passions both inside and outside the classroom. One of our international students, Junyu (William) YAN, has found his inspiration through sport—specifically, badminton.

William shared that when he first arrived in Australia, he wasn't particularly confident in PE and had never considered himself a strong athlete. However, after trying a range of sports including basketball, Taekwondo and snowboarding, he discovered that badminton truly resonated with him.

Soon after settling into school life, William joined a local badminton club, where he began attending weekly professional training sessions. Although nervous at first, he quickly developed confidence, thanks to the encouragement and guidance of his coaches. These regular trainings not only improved his skills but also helped him grow socially and emotionally.

With his growing passion for the sport, William began participating in friendly matches and social events. Along the way, he discovered that one of his classmates, Steven, also shared a love for badminton. The two have become close friends and teammates, regularly playing both singles and doubles in school and community matches.

“What I enjoy most about badminton,” William says, “is the thrill of the game—the excitement, intensity and energy in every shot. It keeps me motivated, focused, and happy.”

William’s journey is a great example of how international students at DSC are encouraged to explore their interests and build meaningful connections. His story highlights the importance of extracurricular activities in promoting student wellbeing, confidence and engagement during their time in Australia.

🎶 International Student Shines on DSC Music Tour

At Doncaster Secondary College, our international students continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to learning, growth, and community engagement. Not only do they strive for academic excellence, but they also contribute meaningfully to all areas of school life — including student leadership, co-curricular programs, and cultural enrichment initiatives.

Whether it’s through sport, music, visual arts, media, design, or craft, our international students embrace every opportunity to explore their talents and broaden their experiences.

One inspiring example is Zian (Mia) GAO, a dedicated international student and proud member of the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Project. Mia recently participated in the DSC Music Tour to Brisbane, where she not only showcased her musical talent but also connected with fellow students and staff through a shared love of performance.

Reflecting on the tour, Mia said:

"Our Music Tour to Brisbane and the Gold Coast was such an amazing experience. We performed at places like MacGregor Primary School, Dreamworld, and even at a regional music camp with students from across Queensland. It was exciting to share our music with different audiences and be part of workshops that helped us grow as performers. We also had a lot of fun exploring! From riding rollercoasters at Movie world and Dreamworld to sightseeing around Cavill Avenue and visiting the Skydeck, every day was packed with fun and memories. Spending the week with my friends, performing, learning, and having fun made this trip truly unforgettable. I’m so grateful I got to be part of it!"

We are incredibly proud of Mia and all our international students who continue to make the most of every opportunity at DSC. Their enthusiasm, resilience, and active involvement enrich our school community every day.
