‘Watch Out – Safe Zone’ Contest Award Ceremony

Doncaster Secondary College was proud to host the “Watch Out – Safe Zone” Contest Award Ceremony—a community-focused event that celebrated creativity, student leadership, and the promotion of safety. Held in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch Manningham, the event recognised outstanding artwork by students and staff, all centred around key messages of community safety and crime prevention.

The ceremony brought together award recipients, members of the Principal Team, representatives from Neighbourhood Watch, the Manningham Police Force, and the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Team to honour the winners and their meaningful contributions.

Two of our outstanding student leaders, Meyly (Elly) TE, 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Ambassador, and Elyse VAN DER MEI, 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Leader, confidently stepped into the role of Masters of Ceremony (MCs). Their professionalism, leadership, and poise reflected the values of our school community.

As MCs, Elly and Elyse warmly welcomed guests, introduced speakers, and announced award recipients. Their reflections on the experience highlight the personal growth, sense of responsibility, and pride they felt in contributing to such a meaningful event.

“Through this experience, I developed confidence in public speaking, strengthened my event coordination skills, and learned how to engage a formal audience. It was rewarding to recognise the creative efforts of participants and see how art can spread powerful community messages. I’m proud to have contributed to such a meaningful initiative and represent the Student Voice team in promoting school and community values.”Meyly (Elly) TE

“Being an MC for such an important event was also a unique learning experience. I had a chance to chat briefly with a member of the Police Force, who shared insights into how community involvement, like this contest, aids their work in keeping our neighbourhoods safe. My contributions included preparing and delivering the introductory and closing remarks and ensuring all the key messages about safety and community were clearly conveyed.”Elyse VAN DER MEI

Members of the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Team shared their thoughts and reflections on being part of this special event:

‘During the preparation for the Watch Out – Safe Zone contest, we received helpful advice from Manningham NHW, such as renaming the contest and separating awards by year levels to ensure fairness. I also helped promote the event by putting up posters around the school and encouraged my friends and classmates to enter the contest. It was rewarding to see students and teachers enjoy the contest and create such impressive artworks.’ -Junyu (William) YAN

‘Watching students and staff come together to create street art that promotes community safety made me feel genuinely happy and hopeful. The artworks showed that keeping our community safe doesn’t always require forceful measures like deploying night guards—it can start with something as simple as a paintbrush.

This competition also strengthened community connections, bringing students and staff closer and helping to build more meaningful relationships.

The success of the project was made possible by the dedication and teamwork of all members of the 2025 Global Learning Student Voice. This experience has inspired me to continue being involved in projects that unite people and make a positive impact.’ - Kuysing (Kyle) TE

Neighbourhood Watch Secretary, Mr Ian Morris, and DSC Assistant Principal, Ms Belinda McGee, also delivered inspiring speeches during the ceremony. Belinda has kindly agreed to share her speech with our DSC community:

‘Good afternoon, everyone, It’s a real pleasure to be here today to celebrate the winners of the ‘Watch Out – Safe Zone’ Contest — an inspiring initiative that has brought together creativity, community spirit, and a strong message about safety and crime prevention.

This project, proudly led by our International Student Program in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch Manningham, has given our students and staff a unique platform to express their voices through street art-style illustrations. The powerful designs we received not only demonstrate incredible artistic talent but also reflect a deep understanding of what it means to care for and contribute to a safe and inclusive community.

To all our winners — congratulations! Your work stood out for its creativity, clarity of message, and community relevance. You’ve made a real impact, and your efforts deserve to be celebrated.

A heartfelt thank you to our judging panel for generously giving their time and expertise, and to our amazing 2025 Global Learning Student Voice Project Team — Elly, Kyle, Peter, Madison, Elyse, and William — for your leadership and dedication in bringing this initiative to life.

And finally, thank you to everyone involved — especially International Student Team for their ongoing support, and to our entire school community for embracing this important message.

Together, we’ve shown that when creativity meets purpose, we can make a difference.

Thank you, and congratulations once again to all.’

DSC's Production of The Crucible

Over three unforgettable nights, our talented cast and crew brought Arthur Miller’s The Crucible to life with emotionally charged and layered characterisation. It was an impressive and professional display from everyone involved, both onstage and behind the scenes.

Opening night, the theatre was electric— the excitement of that first performance was palpable, with every actor focused and determined. Many in the audience were moved to tears as they watched the story unfold. Friday’s VIP night was another highlight, with special guests in attendance. The cast rose to new heights, supported by the precision and professionalism of our backstage and technical teams, whose seamless work in lighting, sound, set, and stage management gave the production its impact. The live quartet positioned at the front of the Proscenium enriched the atmosphere further, deepening the emotional resonance of the play.

The journey concluded with Saturday’s matinee, a fitting celebration of our Year 12 students in their final performance. It was a moving and memorable finale to an incredible season, and a testament to the collaboration, creativity, and hard work of our entire cast and crew.

We were delighted to receive glowing feedback from audience members who were deeply moved by the production. Here is some feedback I received:

“I had the pleasure of attending opening night of The Crucible,  and was blown away by the production! Every actor on stage was committed, focused and brought so much energy and life to the characters and Miller’s words. The production quality was so high across the board — from set, costume, and lighting to the evocative sound design. A huge congratulations to the whole cast and crew. You should all be so proud of yourselves.”

Another audience member shared:

“From the very first moments, it was clear this wasn’t just a school play — it was a vision come to life. There were times I completely forgot I was in a school theatre. The care, thought, and detail in every scene showed not only an understanding of the play “   The performances were remarkable — raw, mature, and deeply moving. There were moments I stopped watching and simply felt. I leaned forward, carried away by the injustice, the honour, and the sacrifice. That’s something even seasoned theatre-makers struggle to do. Bravo.”

Every member of the cast and crew contributed to a piece of theatre that demonstrated collaboration, discipline, and creativity of the highest order. This was an extraordinary achievement and a testament to what our students can accomplish when they work together.

Congratulations to all involved in The Crucible. You created something moving, powerful, and unforgettable.

SEAL Information Evening

On Tuesday the 19th of August we held our SEAL information evening in the Performance centre. Families heard from Year 7, 8 and 9 SEAL students as well as DSC Alumni Ethan J and Jess R and were able to get a snapshot of what the experience of SEAL students at DSC is. Our current and past students spoke passionately about their experiences, growth areas and hopes for the future and they were a credit to the college. Ms Jing and Ms Yang spoke about the incredible work they do in their Maths and English classes and Ms Yang even gave everyone a maths problem to solve! The wind symphony played beautifully as people entered. 233 individuals RSVP’d for the event showing strong community interest in our program and we’re really excited to begin the SEAL testing process for our 2026 cohort.

If any families have questions about the SEAL program and 2026 intake, please contact Anna Holland at: anna.holland@education.vic.gov.au
