What's On In 1/2

Garden

We have jumped straight into action during our Garden lessons with Ashley this term! Students have been excitedly rolling up their sleeves and putting on our brand new gardening gloves to help with weeding, watering and turning the compost bays. The teachers have been impressed with how carefully and safely students can use a variety of gardening tools. A recent garden highlight was when we got to taste test some freshly picked tomatoes from our garden.

We also enjoy visiting the garden during other learning sessions to spend some time outdoors and take inspiration from the world around us. Recently, the garden seemed like a great location to explore the 5 senses and how we can use them to add interesting adjectives to our writing!

Reading

Our Year 1/2 readers are off to a brilliant start this term! Students have confidently returned to the familiar routines of independent and shared reading, with their book boxes filled with texts chosen for both growth and enjoyment. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for books and their growing confidence as readers.

Some of the reading skills we have been practising recently include reading fluently, making predictions, and making connections to the characters or events in a story. We have also been building our reading stamina, which means focusing on the book and avoiding distractions for increasing periods of time. This helps us think about what we are reading, understand the text, and connect with what we are reading.

Take Home Readers

Each Monday students will take home 5 readers to enjoy at home across the week. Including your child in recording each book in their reading log can give them a sense of achievement. We also visit the library each week, where students will be able to borrow a book to take home for the week. Reading for both growth and enjoyment are equally important, and your child also benefits from hearing you read an engaging picture story book or information text on a topic they’re interested in. Thank you for your support in ensuring your child is engaging in regular reading at home and growing their love of books!
