Week 1 and 2 of Performing Arts was dedicated to NAIDOC Week, with a focus on Indigenous dance and song. Foundation, Year 1 and 2 joined in Dance With Tom, an ABC Kids show teaching Yugambeh language and stories through movement. They also learnt about traditional Indigenous dance and music-making, including Yidaki (didgeridoos), boomerangs and clapping sticks.

Year 3-6 were mesmerised watching a performance by the Indigenous Bangarra Dance Theatre. They compared this to traditional dance and music and how stories can be shared. Following this, they watched Emma Donovan, an Australian singer-songwriter who sang a cover version of Billie Eilish’s song Birds of a Feather for NAIDOC Week. This song also featured Drifiting Clouds, another Indigenous singer from Arnhem Land and has singing in 2 Indigenous languages.

Over the next few months, we will be introducing the students to a range of Indigenous artists and exploring the music they create and how they continue and revitalise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
