Beanies 4 Brain Cancer is coming

Each year Ziele House supports Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer as our House Charity. Brain Cancer is a truly insidious disease that has impacted so many of us. As it currently stands survival rates have not changed in the past 30 years. Eighty percent of patients diagnosed will die within 5 years, and one Australian will be diagnosed with Brain Cancer every 5 minutes! It is through the research funded by charities like this, we can improve these statistics.

This year Ziele is holding our annual Mufti and Beanie Day on Thursday 19 June – for a gold coin donation (collected in Tutor), students are allowed to wear appropriate Mufti and a Beanie of their choice.

We are also able to donate via the below link (which will add to our previous year’s contributions as part of the cumulative total seen), or via the QR code.

Please note – we are not selling Beanies at school, but the official charity beanie is being sold exclusively by Decjuba this year.

Ziele Day

On Wednesday 21 May, Ziele House celebrated our annual Ziele Day – a day where we celebrate all things Ziele. While the origins of this annual celebration are shrouded in mystery, well, in reality it began a number of years ago when a group of students asked "what day is Ziele's Birthday?". Not Doctor Ziele who we are named after, the house, what day do we celebrate the house? After much debate, it was decided that Ziele Day is May 17, to be celebrated each year on the closest House Meeting to this day. We have been celebrating Ziele Day annually ever since.

What I personally love about Ziele Day is that it was, and continues to be, completely student driven - students asked the question, chose the date, organised the original event... And now remind me about it every year.

This year Ziele House celebrated with Cake and Conversation, coming together as a house, as a family, to share food, and spend time together. Thank you to Olivia Laws (Year 10) for baking the official Ziele Day Cake, and to the many other Ziele families who provided themed cupcakes, biscuits, slices, and snacks. Our cake was cut by our House Captains Monty Darwin and Ashlee Cremona. Reportedly it was delicious. By the time I got to the table it had been devoured.

The mighty House of Ziele has a long and illustrious history as one of our School’s foundation houses. A number of our current Ziele students are second generation, and we have at least one alumni Ziele family who sent three generations to BMGS dating back to the 1940s. Recently one of last year’s Year 12s came in to visit and meet the current Year 7 cohort – as I always say “Once a Ziele, always a Ziele”
