Head of Sport Report

This week, we are pleased to welcome back the NSW Blues, who are using our facilities to train in preparation for the first State of Origin match. The recent wet weather may prove useful as they adapt to conditions expected in next week’s game.

As a result, over the coming weeks, all our teams will be playing away matches. Please check bus departure times carefully, and ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled departure. It is essential that students wear the correct sports uniform and notify the school if they are not travelling on the bus. Unused seats could mean a smaller bus might have been booked, so communication is key.

At the recent Colours Assembly, I spoke about the importance of commitment—to your team, coaches, and the broader sporting community—whether playing at home or away. Unfortunately, not everyone has taken this message to heart, and it has been disappointing to see some letting others down through a lack of follow-through. This has especially been the case when teams have away games.

I would like to see everyone lift their standards and finish the term strong. Good luck to everyone in their upcoming games.

Congratulations

Ultra Trail

Congratulations to the following students who competed in the UT11 event last week — an impressive achievement in a challenging endurance race.

  • Alton Freeman – 3rd place (outstanding result!)
  • Paddy Humby – 28th
  • James Klein – 55th
  • Deane Sweaney – 193rd

Well done to all four boys for their determination and effort in this demanding event.

Hockey

Congratulations to James Reynolds on his recent selection in the NSWCIS Hockey team following a strong performance at the NSWCIS Hockey Championships. James will go on to represent CIS at the NSW All Schools Championships later this term. We wish him all the best for this exciting opportunity.

Netball

Congratulations to Jessica Harris, who was recently selected in the ISA Netball team and represented ISA at the NSWCIS Championships.

Rose Perisce-Burrell also attended the championships as an umpire and has now been selected as the NSWCIS umpire for the upcoming NSW All Schools Championships — a fantastic achievement and recognition of her officiating abilities.

Well done to both Jessica and Rose on their outstanding accomplishments in netball!

ISA Cross Country

This carnival is next Wednesday 28th May. Please ensure you have advised the school if you are catching the bus.

BMGS Singlets can be hired from the uniform shop. Those students who have a basketball singlet are permitted to run in this.

Remember if you have done something great in sport drop me an email mharris@bmgs.nsw.edu.au

Football Match Reports Round 1 (3rd May 2025)

13 Boys were defeated by Oakhill College (1 – 8)

This was an encouraging start to the season for the 13s, as this was many of their first games in an 11 a side football team, let alone football all together. Despite coming up against a very skilled Oakhill side, each of the boys showed something to be proud of in the game and should be commended on their positive and enthusiastic attitude. Shout out to Charlie who was our captain this week, who set up a nicely worked goal for Will.

By Connor Secker (13 Boys Coach)

14 Boys were defeated by Oakhill College C (1 – 2)

We had a good start to the season with a narrow loss to Oaks. The boys adjusted to their first game well keeping the persistent attack to a single goal deficit in the first half. Our defence was solid and we even had a few breakaway opportunities. We scored early in the second half through a great team effort with Liam and Audius collaborating to get the ball past the keeper. Unfortunately, a hand ball penalty gave Oaks a chance to score their second goal. We lost the game 2-1.

15 Boys were defeated by Oakhill College (1 – 5)

Oakhill got the game underway and it was an even contest in the opening stages of the game. Callan was holding down full back and Jenson was locking down the midfield. We were just struggling to create attacking momentum. Ethan made some excellent saves in goal and was growing into the game. However, we struggled to capitalise when we had the ball. We started the second half well pushing more and more on the Oakhill defence. A cross came in from Oli, Paddy took a few touches to get the ball under his spell, he whipped it to the far corner. Tired minds and bodies were left on the pitch and Oakhill capitalised getting a fourth and then a fifth just before the end.

By Will Groenewegen (15 Boys Coach)

Second XI Boys were defeated by Oakhill College (0 – 1)

Our seconds travelled to competition favourites, Oakhill for Round 1. The boys lost 1-0 but were very unlucky in front of goal and copped a goal from a miskicked cross. Sometimes that just happens. Everyone could see the boys improving as the game progressed and, despite the result, the boys were satisfied with their start to the season.

By Tom Daniels (2nd XI Coach)

First XI Boys defeated Oakhill College (2 – 0)

The boys took on Oakhill for the first round of the football season. We were undoubtedly eager to kick off our season, with some good pre-season training thanks to our coach, Tom. From the get-go, our attackers applied heavy pressure to their defence, with numerous chances on goal within the first twenty minutes. A beautiful through ball from the midfield saw our attackers pounce, and Flynn was able to convert this chance into our first goal of the season. Throughout the second half, the same energy and intensity were applied, both offensively and defensively, as we dominated possession in their half. A corner cross saw the keeper fumble the ball, where Coen saw this opportunity to change the score to a 2-0 lead. For the rest of the second half, we played with composure as we saw many opportunities that were unlucky to go in. This was a classy and dominant performance from the boys to start the season.

Football Match Reports Round 2 (10th May 2025)

Junior Girls defeated Central Coast Grammar (2 – 0)

It was nice to finally have a game at home and have a 2-0 win over Central Coast Grammar School. Well done Elise for scoring both goals, and causing trouble to their defence on quite a few occasions. We have a few new players and they have integrated well into the team. Well done to Ayla and Rosie, as they both had their best games for BMGS. Overall, a solid first up result. Well done girls.

By David Mellor (Junior Girls Coach)

First XI Girls defeated Central Coast Grammar (9 – 0)

The team delivered a strong 9–0 win against Central Coast Grammar in Division Two. With sunny weather and excellent pitch conditions, the team was able to settle quickly and play with confidence. We started with our preferred line-up and took control of the game early. Ellie and Ivy both scored impressive hat tricks, leading the attack with energy and determination. Sophie added two goals, including a tap-in from a well-placed cross by Ellie. Leila composed an excellent finish scoring one goal, creating a diverse scoreboard of skill. We were especially grateful to Central Coast Grammar for making the long trip to our school, and we appreciated the spirit they brought to the game. In the second half, we played with more confidence and control, keeping possession well and creating plenty of chances. It was a confident and well-rounded performance from start to finish.

13 Boys were defeated by St Augustine’s (0 – 4)

Building on the teamwork from the training sessions and the previous week's game, a much improved and organised defensive effort led by this week's captain Isaac, more than halved the goals conceded from last week. Every player should be encouraged by their efforts in the game, with much rotation and having a go of different positions, they all gave it a red hot go.

By Connor Secker (13 Boys Coach)

14 Boys defeated Oakhill College D (1 - 0)

Early game had the players on the field for an 8am start. We had a great start to the game applying immediate offensive pressure. We spent most of the first half in their side of the field. Liam was fouled in the box for a free kick attempt which he sunk with ease. We went to the break leading the game 1-0. After the break we managed to hold out any attempts on our goal. We also had several unsuccessful attempts on their goal. The entire team played well to secure the game. Our defence once again held strong. We won the game 1-0.

By Audius Mtawarira Snr (14s Boys Coach)

15 Boys defeated Chevalier College (1 - 0)

The game started as an evenly contested end to end game. Chev started well, pushing us back into our own half and we struggled to get out. However, our defence was holding strong with Jenson marshalling the midfield alongside Vengi. Our front three of Tom, Oli and Eli were working hard trying to create some attacking momentum but it just wouldn’t quite click. We ended the half well, with a succession of corners putting pressure on their keeper, however we came in at the break 0-0.  The boys started the second half with much more determination, winning their duels and pushing forward more and more. Milo was an absolute force in Midfield, filling in for Jenson, winning every tackle and seemed to be everywhere. Larry and Emmerson were so solid at fullback with Angus leading the defence alongside Eligh.S. Tom sent a sublime pass with the outside of his right foot to put Oli through on goal. One on One, he doesn’t miss and we went 1-0 up. A thoroughly deserved victory, every single player had a good performance and should be proud of themselves. Hopefully the first win of many, well done boys!

Second XI Boys drew against Oakhill College (1 – 1)

Round 2 saw us have our first home game and we were pitted against a strong Oxley team. As all teams play at home together this year there was a bumper crowd and a fantastic atmosphere. The boys definitely used this to their advantage, particularly Mitchell who scored the goal of the season. Yes, it's only the second game, but it was a goal worthy of this claim. The boys played well in the second half but copped a goal on the counter attack. With only one substitute and the opponents regularly throwing on fresh legs, our boys showed true grit to hold on to the draw. Pleasingly, the team improved again this week and they are putting into practice what we do at training.

By Tom Daniels (2nd XI Coach)

First XI Boys defeated Oxley College (2 – 1)

Coming off a dominant win from the previous week, the boys sought to apply momentum into their home game against Oxley. From the kickoff, thanks to a very supportive BMGS sideline crowd, the intensity was high, and BMGS started strong. A controversial foul inside the box from an Oxley defender allowed for a penalty within the first ten minutes of the game, which BMGS was able to capitalise on, taking the lead, 1-0. Opposing pressure was also applied by Oxley's midfielders and attackers as they created chances on goal. A cross from an Oxley player saw their attacker head the ball to the back of the net, equalising at 1-1 before half time. In the second half, yet another beautiful through-ball chance allowed our attackers a chance at goal, scoring and placing BMGS at a 2-1 lead. A last-minute shot from an Oxley player helped showcase our goalie, Luke Gibson, with a miraculous last-minute save to deny Oxley an equaliser.

Hockey Match Report

BMGS 1sts Hockey Vs SACS - Loss 1-2

On a beautiful sunny day, the BMGS 1sts Hockey team took to the field for their first home game of the season against a strong SACS side. Despite a challenging start, with SACS scoring two early goals in the first half, the team responded with determination and resilience. Tactical changes in field positions and a renewed focus on tightening our defence helped shut down SACS' attacking plays and limited their opportunities moving forward.

Heading into the second half with a positive mindset, the team worked hard to protect the goal circle and remained disciplined under pressure. Zoe, our goalkeeper, had a spectacular game, making several brilliant clears and crucial saves that kept us in the contest. A strong attacking run up the field resulted in a well-earned goal just five minutes before the final whistle, bringing the score to 2–1. Standout performances included Natalie, who was a key anchor in centre half with her calm and steady presence in the midfield. Ruby had several sensational runs from the halves, while Kerry and Angie made impactful contributions up front in attack. In defence, Nisha and Eliza were rock-solid, consistently blocking SACS advances and allowing few chances through. While the final score was a 2–1 loss, the team showed impressive character, cohesion, and growth, laying a strong foundation for the rest of the season.

Round 2 Match Report

BMGS verse Chevalier

This Saturday the first hockey team played an away game against Chevalier.

When we stepped out onto the field we were short by three players but Chevalier kindly lent us six of their players throughout the game to make sure we had a fun and worthwhile match. We are very grateful to these players.

Chevalier started with the ball and through the first half the game was very even, going up and down the field Kerry played as the center half going out of her comfort zone and playing a new position which she did amazingly and Heste who also went out of her comfort zone played in a new position as an inner where she did a fire job especially defensively when the opposition approached. By the end of the first half we were down 0-1 but everyone was happy and fueled with adrenaline.

In the second half everyone got a bit tired after playing without any subs in the first half and we let the ball slip away from us allowing Chevalier to hit the back of the net another five times leaving the score at 0-6 when the buzzer went off. Ruby had lots of good runs up the pitch and was open for the team to pass to her when someone was running onto us and we needed to get rid of the ball. As we walked off at the end of the game everyone was happy especially when Chevalier announced morning tea. The chocolate cupcakes and brownies were described as “delicious”.

Everyone had a fantastic and fun game. And we are pumped to hit the field in are next game at are home pitch.

Netball News

On Thursday 15th May, ISA competed at the CIS Netball Championships at Netball Central in Homebush. Jess Harris played for the ISA team with Ruby Roberts identified as a training shadow. The ISA team finished third overall. Congratulations to Jess who played 6 games of C over the day and was selected in the Possible and Probables game at the end of the day. Unfortunately, Jess narrowly missed selection in the Open CIS team.

Rose Perisce-Burrell represented ISA as a student umpire at these championships. After officiating 5 games, CIS selectors awarded three umpires the opportunity to represent CIS in the NSW All Schools Championships. Rose was one of the three selected for the Open girls category. These will be held on June 16th at Netball Central. All the best Rose.

Well done to all girls on these achievements.
