Year One Team News

with Steph and Emma

Hello Year One families,

What a wonderful start to Term 2! Our Grade 1’s have settled straight back into routines and we were so excited to see all the bright smiles and hear about your holiday adventures over the past two weeks. This term is going to be full of fun stories, new games, and amazing things to learn together.

Animal Land Excursion

Our excursion to Animal Land will be happening on Wednesday the 6th of May (Week 3). Students will bring their school bags on the excursion with their packed recess and lunch. They will need to bring a drink bottle and their hats. Thank you to those people who have volunteered to be a parent helper on this day. As a reminder all parent helps must have completed the  Parent Volunteer Induction on Compass and make sure you have a Working with Children Check on file at the office.

Parent Helpers - Reading

It is lovely having parents and grandparents from our 1C and 1K community start our Parent Helper Reading program by coming in and taking the time to read with our Willy Kids. It's not too late to pop your name down for a Tuesday or Thursday morning. Please ensure you’ve completed the school’s Volunteer Registration and Induction for 2026 on Compass and have a valid Working with Children Check on file at the office. If you have any questions, please speak to your child's teacher.

Reader Repairs

Thanks to all the families reaching out when well worn pages are coming out of the Little Learners readers. If you notice a page in need of repair, please let us know and we can help fix this up for the next time it is sent home.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3 - 4

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.2 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Our focus for Week 3 will be the phoneme /er/ represented by the graphemes ‘ir’, ‘ur’ and ‘er’. Our focus for Week 4 continues to look at ‘er’ representing the sound /er/ as well as the schwa.

Writing: We will begin a special writing project next week that will highlight sentences, letter formation, punctuation and adjectives. In Week 4 we will begin exploring informative texts like facts and information reports.

Numeracy: We will be recognising and classifying 2D shapes and 3D objects using obvious features such as sides, corners and faces.

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is “How and why do we care for animals?”. Our excursion to Animal Land is on Wednesday. This inquiry unit also relates to our show and tell topic this term.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Our Willy Kids focus for weeks 3 and 4 is “Willy Kids Wonder". We will be using creative thinking to come up with new ways to solve problems. During our Respectful Relationships sessions our topic this term is Personal and Cultural Strengths. We will be learning to identify and describe personal and cultural strengths, explain how these strengths contribute to school and family life, as well as identifying ways to care for others, including ways of making and keeping friends.
