Beijing Opera Mask Design
Year 7 & 8 Chin
This week, our students learnt about the history and cultural heritage of Beijing Opera masks, exploring how the colours and designs represent different characters and personalities in traditional Chinese theatre. They gained an understanding of its cultural significance and symbolism. Afterward, the students enjoyed applying their knowledge by designing and creating their own unique Beijing Opera masks, showcasing both creativity and cultural appreciation.
We completed our activity where we had to design our own Beijing Opera Mask. Each colour represents different characteristics. There are a few colours. For example, red represents prosperity and intelligence and is a positive colour. Black is a neutral colour and represents honesty. Blue is a negative colour and represents stubbornness. I like this activity as we got to open up our creativity and also it was fun trying on our masks.

I’m trying to make a character who’s fierce and intelligent. This activity is really fun as it makes us be creative and artistic. I really love this activity and I hope others find it this way too.

During Chinese we made Beijing Opera masks. It was a great activity. I used the colours purple (Which means sophistication) and red (which means bravery and intelligence). I created the male main character which is smart, just and brave.

Today, in Chinese we designed our own Beijing Opera masks using colourful and wavey colours. Everyone had fun and the other designs were really cool.

During Chinese, we learned about Beijing Opera. To help us understand this topic better we made Beijing Opera masks. The masks were quite different from masks from other countries. It was cool that each colour used on the mask had a meaning. Overall, it was a fun way to learn about Chinese culture.
