Mathmatics

In maths this term, students will continue to build onto their knowledge of fractions with particular focus on decimal and percentage equivalence. They will use understanding of place value within the base-ten number system to explore how 100% represents a complete whole and how this can be represented in fractional and decimal forms. This learning will connect to their exploration of chance and probability as they investigate the likelihood of different events occurring through chance experiments. Students will observe and record results from repeated experiments and calculate the fractional and percentage likelihood of different outcomes.

In our measurement unit, students will explore mass and capacity in relation to choosing appropriate units of measurement for appropriate accuracy, applying knowledge of converting within the decimal system. They will also apply developing investigation skills by conducting their own surveys to collect data and understand trends in data distributions. This will involve interpreting displays and representing their own data digitally, where students make decisions on how to communicate findings.

Throughout the term, students will continue to improve fluency involving the four operations and practice skills allowing them to solve worded problems. This will also involve daily practice of multiplication and division tables using digital resources such as Hit the Button and Maths Online, as well as games and other collaborative learning strategies.

As part of Home Learning, students will continue to use Maths Online to consolidate mathematical concepts taught in class and develop fluency in number skills. Students will continue to be given the set task at the beginning of each week to be completed by the Friday of that same week, where there will also be opportunities to complete this during class time.
