Writing

Students will continue to use The Grandest Bookshop in the World to assist them in writing an historical fiction narrative based in 1890’s Melbourne in the famous Coles’ Book Arcade. They will explore how incorporating elements of magical realism can enhance their narrative with use of specific vocabulary they have analysed throughout the unit. They will also integrate figurative language to demonstrate their understanding of its effect, as explored in reading lessons.
In connection to The Last Bear students will be creating persuasive letters and look at the purpose and structure of a persuasive piece of writing. They will draw from their knowledge of persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, emotive language and reasoning with evidence as explored earlier in the year during their War Horse unit.
In spelling, students will continue to add to their understanding of different spelling patterns by exploring the linguistic roots of base words, prefixes and suffixes. Additionally to explicit teaching of handwriting, students will be provided a 20-minute touch typing skill session through the Dance Mat Typing Computing Game. All students have access to their own computer and, through this web-based educational platform, are learning about proper finger positioning and improving their typing accuracy and rate.
